J. Herbin calligraphy sets -- write like an Egyptian!

Got an email from Cult Pens today with the bland subject "5 for 4 inks ends Friday," but I always open their emails to see what they have that I would want, because there is always something!

Today's email had something very interesting: new J. Herbin "writing sets" from various eras and cultures: Egyptian, Medieval, Venetian, Student (?), and XIXth century. Each set includes a writing implement, ink, and something to write on. For example, the Egyptian set contains a reed pen, papyrus, and 10 ml black ink (and a booklet).

Because I have taught hands-on college courses on the history of handwriting (I am a newly retired medievalist college professor), I actually have plenty of reed pens, papyrus, turkey quills, and goat parchment (not to mention qalams and ahar paper), so I was not planning on ordering any of these. But I assumed that others on FPN might be interested.

And if anyone does have experience with these sets, I have questions: is the quill an actual quill and not just a feather with a nib? The same for the vellum / parchment included: is it really animal skin parchment or just colored paper?

For those who do not get Cult Pens emails, you can find these sets under either "What's New" or Herbin's brand pages (sort for newest). (Not affiliated with Cult, just a regular happy customer!)

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
