Jinhao 9016—Dadao junior?

Dan Carmell

Recommended Posts

I thought it was a typo, but apparently it’s a New Year’s baby dadao! Comes with the new heartbeat nib in 4 sizes (EF, F, M, Bent) and some new colors.

I compared the specs and it’s 4mm shorter and 3mm less in diameter. 22 grams to the 9019’s 32 grams, though? That’s a big change!

Is the 9016 the 146 to the 9019? It appears so! I’ve ordered two, only a couple shops have them so far on AliExpress.

In the title/description, it says "35mm". That translates to a number 6 nib. So, yes, the 9016 is a smaller version of the huge 9019. They are using the new high-capacity converter. That's a good news.image.jpeg.026165ae221732b61584fec2fcdd2345.jpeg

I wondered about both, excellent to have that clarified!

Sigh.....................what is a helpless, hopeless shill to do?  Order 3....................... should I say thanks?  or avoid this location?

But I went way out on a limb and ordered one with a bent nib, so we'll see what happens.  Since I live in F and EF land, with a few Ms for, um, variety.

When it’s just $7.42 a pen and you know it’s likely to be excellent, it’s hard to practice self-restraint! I have no luck with those fude nibs, I think my fine motor skills aren’t up to changes the angle as I write. I also don’t chew gum while walking 😂

Just ordered orange and transparent brown for a change!

Price has reduced as much as 5.70 euros each! How am I supposed not to order? Lol.

It’s a plot 😂

I ordered the fude in the black; it was the only way i could justify another black pen.  It will be my first fude and i don't have any expectation of being able to use it.  Fortunately, i have every confidence that i can swap it out to something usable.  Yes, i recognize the, um, inconsistency inherent therein................ I bought on sale a while back an old style Goulet Jowo stub nib.  They only had it in 1.5mm.  I find it totally unusable, altthough if my house catches fire i may be able to douse it before the fire department arrives.  One day i may try a 1.1mm stub.  maybe.  I see others using them and making lovely lines, but apparently that is above my pay grade.  But there is always hope for evolution.................

Along with the black, I, too, snagged the orange (it looks red to me, so we'll see what arrives) and the transparent brown.  And yes, at that price, really, how can you not buy more than one?

I did order a green Lemon M2 and four of the Lemon M2S models because suddenly they are offering some color choices.  I found those when looking for the 9016s than Dan Carmell had posted about.  Because I was so smitten with the four M1s I had gotten, I just assumed these would be good as well.  It is quite a relief to know that Dan Carmell has already received his order of the newer Lemons and has confirmed their quality.  Now, instead of waiting with a degree of angst, I can await them with unbridled excitement.............

It’s great to try new things, though! I have not mastered the fude nib and probably won’t put the effort required to do so. Changing the angle of the pen while writing is more than my brain and not-so-fine motor skills can accomplish.

The Majohn 136 was offered with a 1.1mm stub that will fit any pen that takes a #6 screw-in nib. Mine isn’t a fire hose like your 1.5mm and it might be a solution. The corners are very forgiving and the line not especially wet—I am not a fan of very wet nibs of any size. Quick example attached.

I wonder who makes the Lemon M1? It’s such a great pen!

Dan,

For having no skills, those are some very nice looking lines you posted with your Majohn 136.  I may have to give it a go after all.

I, too, wonder about the maker of the Lemon series.  I wonder if Mr. Rathbun of Inkquiring minds has any knowledge on that score; he frequently does get some details on the Chinese pen industry, which I personally find quite fascinating.  I keep thinking that although a sizeable percentage of the population of the planet seems to live in Shanghai, I get the feeling that the fountain pen community there is not that large and that most of them know each other and work together a fair amount.  My first Majohn M600S pens (before the company name change) all had Kaigelu EF nibs on them.  I have gotten pens from Jinhao, Kaigelu and Majohn all with parts from one of the other makers.  I fantasize that they are having a ball together making pens.

Just one comment on the pen copying issue.  From my perspective, I could not possibly have made better choices than the Chinese have made when selecting pens to copy, so I salute them for their exquisite taste in pens.....................

Just got a 9019 and I find its barrel too thick, this 9016 would be a much better size for me…another temptation.

Hola, tocayo.

It is a matter of getting used to the 9019. I found them for a ridiculous price on AliExpress, and bought quite a few. I enjoy them a lot.

Do they use the same large screw-in cartridges?

It seems so, although as the photo shows, the converter piston knob on the 9016 is clear plastic rather than metal, as is the 9019. But now I’ve seen photos of 9019 with the plastic piston…

The size difference doesn’t seem to be big enough to make a 10 gram difference, but apparently it does.

Presumably the barrel and cap are proportionally thinner in the 9016 to go with the reduced length and diameters. Plus plastic instead of metal. It doesn't take much to make 10g!

Got my two pens today: transparent brown and opaque red. Similar size to a Pelikan M800, probably a bit bigger... like a 146? Will check at home.

Shorter and thinner that the 9019, as expected, and with "old" usual Jinhao nibs, instead of the new "heart" ones, probably because these are the very first models.

I am sure future ones will be equipped with the new nib.

New "big" screw-in converter fitted.

Lots of fun for 5.75 euros 😮

Like I said, it rained pens today and my black and orange/red 9016s arrived as well. I like the red, even if it’s orange—bright and rather unique. What I noticed was that the 9016 posts much better than its big brother and quite deeply. Deeply enough that I would write with it posted, and I don’t do so generally.
