Noodler’s Socrates

This is a gorgeous purple, very wet but alas with long dry times on coated paper. Despite that, I enjoyed using it for sketching with a Japanese Ef or journaling in my Peter Pauper notebook with its thick absorbent paper.

I would recommend it only with finer nibs on coated papers and with any nib on thick absorbent paper. It is surprisingly very well behaved on copy paper.

Like most purples it has the tendency to stain clear sections, and I had to resort of a cleaning solution to clean my pen.

This is pricier than the normal lineup of Noodler’s ink and I believe it was originally destined for the British Market.

Let's start with the chroma:

While the scan shows ghosting, to the naked eye, there's none.

Yummy chroma - makes me want a grape Popsicle. :D  This is indeed a pretty purple.  Looks like the cream color of Midori paper serves to mute it a little, less so the TR 68gsm.  I has added this one to the list.

Meanwhile, on to the important bits... What!? No swatch kitty? :( Did Socrates hate cats, or something? ;)  <- water-test kitty and his beard. And those ears - I'm thinking he's got some Oriental Shorthair in him. ;)  Very well done on the line drawing of Socrates!  But best of all is Yoda-kitty!! :sm_cat: And Mousey with his little light saber!   They're fabulous!

Thank you, Yazeh, for a great review of a lovely ink.

Some of the swatches were done before the kitty swatch thingy ;)

I doubt it ;) He was named the wisest man alive, by the oracle of Delphi, as he was the only one who aware of his ignorance :)

I like drawing long eared cats. (I'm not sure if I like them in real life, their too energetic for my taste ;) )

Happy New Year!

This IS a pretty purple, and I'm not even a purple ink fan.

Compared to the JH Violette Pensee (the only comparison ink I have) it seems somewhat red-violet, which I like. But the long dry time and stainy-ness makes this a No.

Love the artwork, though.  Stalwart Mustachio Kitteh! Scenes from Star Wars. Swirly lines. I want to shout, 'Hey, Soc, don't drink that!'

Thanks, @yazeh, for another Ink-Sploration!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Excellent point.  Anyone that wise would have  to like kitties. :D

That does look like a really nice color.  Too bad about the dry times, though.... :(

A pity isn't it? now I'm testing La Reine Mauve. It reminds me a lot of Kung Te-Cheng, (your favorite ink ;) ) scent wise. :D

La Reine Mauve was well-named (color-wise, at any rate -- because it's DEFINITELY mauve).  But that was the ink that I'm STILL (years later) trying to figure out how I got it on the *heel* of my hand....  :headsmack:

Thank you @yazeh for this comprehensive ink review and for your always exciting graphical interpretations.  The most I love the stunning and almost psychedelic linework in the portrait. Nevertheless, your cats are always good for a surprise appearance. :)

This ink colour is fully in my preferred hue range. Have I told already? - my drawer is full of purple-grey inks, because I can't get enough of them ... 🤔

One life!

Merriam Webster defines mauve as:

a : a moderate purple, violet, or lilac color
b: a strong purple

My sample is definition b and definitely not a:

What definition is your sample/bottle?

I'm sorry I don't think I've said before how much I always enjoy your reviews: helpful information plus good quotes and fun drawings.  This time I even like the colour (although I do NOT need another purple!), and I love the Socrates drawing and the Yoda kitty.

Thank you!

Mauve is one of the first pigment colors artificially made (mid to late 19th C. IIRC).  It really isn't the same color as "purple" or "violet".  It was such a sensation that everyone wanted clothing of that color, and upholstery for their furniture and stuff.  To the point the time is now known as "the Mauve" era (I don't remember the reason why, but years ago my mom did a bunch of research about the color -- probably having to do with some novel she was writing at the time).

This is what I think of as "mauve": https://htmlcolorcodes.com/colors/mauve-taupe/

And was absolutely the color of my batch of La Reine Mauve.  Great color, but lousy behavior (even for the standard of Noodler's inks getting a bad rap for bad behavior).  It was just a mess....

Thanks for this info. So in a way, calling Marie Antoinette, La Reine Mauve seems anachronistic. You can check the swatch above to my untrained eyes, it looks more purple than mauve.

I yet to test it in my Lamy, so far so good :)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
