Sheaffer Fashion Pens

Brackley141

Recommended Posts

It started out as watching a review of a Sheaffer Fashion pen on YouTube, and then some googling, as one does, and then realizing that I used to have a Fashion ballpoint and wasn't it a nice pen, wonder where it is, hmm dunno, maybe I should but another one, yikes, there are a lot of them, and now here we are.

I collected these over the last few years (luckily they aren't much sought after so they are within my budget) and a while ago I put together a spreadsheet. I don't guarantee it is totally definitive but I think pretty close. If anyone has anything to add, much appreciated.

Anyway, Fashion I's are attached, I hope. I will do Fashion II's and TRZ's next.

Oooh.  I like some of the FP colors....

Thanks for posting the photos, Brackley141.  And, well, not.... :headsmack:

These are a couple of images I found while digging around for more info, an ad that looks like early 90's and a catalogue page. They helped with getting some model names and numbers.

A lot of these pens come with the stickers still attached, or in the original box with the name/number on the label. Otherwise, photos  from past online listings sometimes show the stickers.

I'm doing a bit of an information dump on Fashions and TRZs, I hope nobody minds, but it took a minute to compile this information and everyone might as well benefit. Maybe it will help make these pens more collectable, if you know what it is that you are trying to collect.

Fashion pens were targeting women (although I think they work for everyone) and so came with a Jacquard tapestry pouch (purse pen) or  came as a necklace configuration (the chain just clips on and off) since women's clothing didn't usually have suitable pockets (some things never change), so clips were less useful.

The pencils came a s matching set with the ballpoint and came with a double pouch.

I think they came out about mid-eighties and lasted until late-nineties (1986ish to 2000ish?).

Note: the Fashion I fountain pens are the slim version, similar to the TRZs and slim Targas, so converters/cartridges can be hard to find. I think there are some work-arounds (kawaco mini converter).

Thanks for the heads up about converters.

I had the same issue with the Lady Sheaffer 620 I got at an estate sale recently.  The sac in the original converter was rock hard.  Got lucky and found a replacement one at Peyton Street Pens, after Teri had me measure the diameter of the cartridge on mine to know which size converter to get for it (the converter cost more than double what I'd paid for the pen in the first place, but at least it's now up and running).

It is surprising how often these slim fountain pens come with the converter or a least a dried up cartridge (DON'T THROW THESE AWAY! Clean and reuse!).

I have found boxes of slim cartridges online but I wouldn't trust the ink that is in them now.

Anyway, I think I am all set.

😁😁😁 I wasent paying attention as i was being a Sherlock Holmes with my 70yr old mystery AS9G ( Type ) pen, not definitive yet and i missed your post @Brackley141

Awsome, as @Penguincollector says, exactly what we were looking for and at the moment probably the most difinitive list, now i am going to have a look to see what we have using your charts, Thank you ever so much, it now gives me another avenue to ...i wont say it but its going to happen

@Brackley141 , if you could show the differences in the clips it would be great, Fashion1s had the bent clip and II`s had the straighter clip ? is that correct ?? what is going to be difficult to show is the Gold electroplated versions and there designs

As an aside, I use old Sheaffer and Parker cartridges with no issues whatsoever, have since the late ‘80s, when my dad gave me his Parker 45 with the original Parker/Eversharp cartridges. If there’s evaporation, just top it off with some distilled water. The only exception is blue-black, as there can be some gunk in those from the iron gall.
Your catalog pages are exactly what I was looking for. I used to have that catalog, I  received it when I wrote to Sheaffer and Parker (who also sent one) for a class project on writing customer service letters. My wish back then was to have one of each color to coordinate with my outfit for the day. My absolute favorite is the baby blue one. I finally got a TRZ in that color last year. I love inking it with Peacock Blue. I really want the Fashion II plaids. Information dump to your heart’s content, we love and welcome that.

Not exactly, TRZs have the bent clip, Fashion I and II have the straighter clip.

Here are the Fashion IIs. Photo 2 covers order # 1-12; Photo 3 covers order # 13-21; Photo 4 covers order # 22-31.

If a cell is greyed out on the spreadsheet, I don't think that configuration was made because I have never seen any photo or reference to show that it ever existed, ex. I have never seen any mention or photo of a Model 261 matte grey fountain pen or rollerball so I'm assuming that none were made. Of course, I could be wrong.

Model 230 is ballpoint/pencil only, Models 265, 266 and 267 are only ballpoint. I don't know if 230X is a one-off or not. I got it off someone who lives in Fort Madison where Sheaffer was located, so maybe someone just did it for fun.

Fashion IIs are regular size and use current converters and cartridges. The sections of the fountain pen and rollerball are interchangeable, so you can swap them between pens depending on which configuration suits you. In other words, don't go collecting both the rollerball and fp for each model unless you want to.

Edit: The laque pens in photos 3 and 4 are shiny AF and so are hard to get a good picture.

With your excellent list i can now properly place the pair of Fashion 2`s we have

2 Ballpoints 270 and 271, although one does have a give away clue on it, it is good to be able to place them in a structured list with the ability to see what else exists

Do they all have Sheaffer writen on the side of the clip ?? i have just noticed my 271 does not ??

It varies, most do but some don't. I don't think there is any rational for it, it was whatever parts they were using on that manufacturing day. My 271 does have 'Sheaffer' 'USA' on the clip and my 270 does not, opposite of yours.

Not sure if there are Sheaffer ranges that have 71 as a designation, but i have seen a fasion which is a 271 with a Sheaffer sticker showing 71, either a misprint on the sticker or someone only had a 71 from another range to put on it, i am begining to realise i i like odd Sheaffer pens very much, the other fasination for me is corporate America, Sheaffer as a company must have been absolutely massive in its hay day, coming from the other side of the pond and a different culture i find corporate America utterly fasinating

Going off track for a second, today i purchased a Sheaffer Eaton as new in box, and started creating my own widget for 1950`s Fineline Craftsman ballpoint, widgets are available Stateside but not easy found in the Uk, so ... time to make my own using the original 1950s refil which is no longer made, it still had the original ink at the base of the pen, which my fingers found out is not water based ... what a mess, its not a fancy pen or expensive pen, infact of my all my pens it is probably the cheapest looking thing i own but its the history, it has survived all that time, fasinating ( as Spock would say )

The double digit model numbers are for the TRZ line (20-96). Models 70 and 71 are the same as 270 and 271 except in the TRZ configuration. I'm working on posting the TRZ info that I have later today or tomorrow.
