Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Nemosine Solar Storm 1859

This is review #264 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This is a very nice burnt orange. It did form a little nib crud starting on day 4, but it wasn't enough to interfere with writing.  Cleaning was quick and easy.  The shading on this is so nice that were it available, I would highly recommend it despite the low lubrication. :) But, it's unobtainium, so you'll need to find another ink. :( Birmingham Pen Company have an ink called "Solar Storm" that looks very similar - but they told me it's not the same. They also told me their inks are mixable, so you can fine-tune the colors.

Zoomed in photo (Very close to what my eyes see.)

Scan of Completed Review (Also very close to what my eyes see.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Might exaggerate shading a little, but otherwise close. The ink is paler on these papers for some reason - perhaps my feed was running dry...)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 308µm. With 264 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.)

Microscope image (100x.  Spiky orange.)

Other (Just a little doodle I made with this ink.)

Excellent review @LizEF  What I loved most about this ink was your exquisite "doodle" /mosaic work! It looks like a villa from the time/ era, when Sphinxes, Sends and Wizards roamed around the earth, fighting black magic, skeletons and oily inky wizards!

Thanks for making this Tuesday, before Christmas, exceptionally magical 🙏🙏🙏

Nice! A "funny" color for me inasmuch as I'm not all that hot about plain oranges (although I love the fruit) but a burnt orange will do the thing. First thought was Sazerac and/or Apache Sunset. But I'm not sure if they'll help out to clear us out of unobtania.

:) I do like me a nice burnt orange - even if it's only lightly burnt.   I think one will have to explore far and wide - or start mixing inks - to find a match for this one.  A kind soul gifted me a sample of Sazerac, so when I get to it, I'll compare swatches and include this if it's similar enough.  To my eyes, Birmingham's Solar Storm looks quite similar even if it's not the same.

This is awesome!

1. I love orange inks.
2. Unobtainium? Waaaaah.
3. Lightning bolts of magic in the micro!
4. Wonderful sketch!
5. Go, Quin!

Hmmm. Write about discovery… I discovered I am a nervous wreck. 😜

(And normally I do not copy/paste from elsewhere but also have a question about your process… how long do you keep the review ink in your pen?  And do you ever try the ink in other pens while you are at it?)

@LizEF, thanks so much for all of this Tuesday Magic.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:)  Thank you!  Sorry to torment you with a gorgeous unobtainium ink!  Glad you enjoyed the doodle.  Hope the wreck is resolved soon and you can enjoy the season without stress.

:) No worries! The ink stays in the pen from sometime Tuesday afternoon or evening (after I've cleaned the pen and let it dry) until sometime the following Tuesday morning or early afternoon (depending on when Klaw takes a nap so I can record).  I don't put the ink in other pens while I'm reviewing unless I'm reviewing a cartridge and the ink from the cartridge won't all fit in my Pilot converter - then I put the cartridge in some other pen (unless it's a Pilot cartridge, then I just put the cartridge in the review pen and move it to another Pilot pen when done with the review - because there's way more ink than I need in Pilot cartridges).  HTH.

  I see what you did there!  You're most welcome.  There's another doodle in that thread - multiple colors - from the other Kings.  They are two of my favorite OT stories.

Thank you, @LizEF, for the entertainment, for the writing sample and for the exciting microscopy work! :) Always a pleasure to see a new review popping up! 😋

I like the idea of releasing magic forces without hand gestures and without loudly spoken spells! There is some truth to discover - if magic can be true ... somewhere. 🤫

Looking forward to the ongoing story and would love to see Quin developing into a new variety of high wizard. :D

One life!

I love the deceptive simplicity of this one. It's as if you focus on the core of the story... gorgeous work 👍

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
