Namiki - Discolouration/Unfortunate Situation

Skies

Recommended Posts

I picked up this Namiki Yukari Royale Noshi Bundle from Japan. Unfortunately, it seems the Namiki retailer left this one out on display for years (2014 is the stamping on the nib) which has resulted in this discolouration. Although I wouldn't mind this discolouration from typical use, it was likely in a static position under bright light which has resulted in only half of the pen having this fading appearance.

An exchange with Japan seems too complex (I'm in Canada, but have a home in the US as well). I currently am in communication with Pilot US. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated!

This looks like the same issue as discussed in another recent thread:

I've been reading this sub-forum fairly diligently since 2018 and, besides these two recent threads, don't recall mention of this at another time.  It seems odd that two show up close together, but I guess the world works that way sometimes.

It doesn't sound too me like there's an issue with the pens, the changes are known/expected.  The issue though is that the dealers leave them out on display for years, which speeds the aging, and the consumer buys a "new" pen that actually has years of UV exposure.

I'm still curious to know how Namiki deals with this.  Is it covered by warranty, either officially or as a token of good will?

And it still looks like a fantastic pen! :)

Yes, it is an otherwise beautiful pen! It is just that half of the pen that was under direct light looks like this, while the other side is glossy. It looks unnatural, and at the pen's price it would be preferable to have it received in new condition. I think the most unfortunate aspect is the clip. It feels like the lacquer has dried. I guess the display light was closest to it, and with it potentially being on display for nearly a decade, it is understandable.

I have seen the other thread and thought I'd post on my findings as well, since I think anyone who's buying these pens should be considerate to this.

I am also curious what they will do! I have contacted them and will keep this thread up-to-date. Pilot has generally been good to me over the years, but as mentioned in my initial post, I am all ears for suggestions and input. I have added a couple photos that show it in a more flattering light.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
