Chicago Pen Club 12/17

Howdy- long term lurker, rarely if ever have posted here.

It's my understanding that the Chicago Pen Club will be meeting at the Bartlett library on 12/17 at 1 pm.

Just curious- I've been attending for a while and we have a regular core group, but not a lot of new people attending? Why is that? Over time I've gotten to know most of the people and it's a good group but it's the same core of about 8 people.

There's got to be more people into the hobby in the area, please explain what holds people back from attending?

If you use this post as an excuse to check it out, I'm happy with that but also would like to hear from people on what holds them back from attending.

Thanks,

dan

  • 1 month later...

Hi, Dan,

I've been attending a Chicago metro pen club for a little over a year.  I'm a relative newbie to the hobby, and will never have any interest in spending the kind of money the (delightful and friendly) members of my club put into the hobby.  So this makes it a bit of an inner conflict every time another meeting rolls around.  I have been enjoying restoring some vintage pens, both from the tinkering and fiscal responsibility standpoints!  I have identified one other soul who attends club meetings regularly, and so might try to hang out with him a bit more.  I'm also very interested in the history of pens, which is probably a hazard of my interest in vintage.  But again, I seem to be in the minority here.  So perhaps a mis-match in the interests of members is a reason more folks don/t pursue clubs?

PS What are the interests of your 8 Bartlett folks?  Should I wander over to your neck of the woods sometime for a meeting?

  Thanks for your post!

The Chicago Pen Club, which meets in Bartlett, has several vintage members that are into the history of pens.  Paul and myself run the Chicago Pen Show.  We should be having a meeting this Sunday back at L2 Interactive, 792 W. Bartlett Road in Bartlett.  This is at 2pm.

Many thanks for your reply, Roger.  I'm not sure if I'll be able to attend on Sunday but will try hard to fit it into my Sunday.  I will definitely try to attend in future.  Regards, Marla

Hello! I’m in the NW suburbs and would be interested in attending a meetup for the first time if you all don’t mind someone who is newer to the hobby. How does one go about learning when new events are scheduled?

The meetings are held on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Roger Wooten has an email list that he uses to send a reminder to members since he doesn't always post a meeting notice on this forum. I'd suggest that you send your contact information to him (Roger W.) to get the reminders.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
