Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Private Reserve Infinity Turquoise

This is review #262 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This is your standard turquoise, the one that every manufacturer makes.  Cleaning was easy with just water, an extra flush may be required - it was quite saturated.  A longish dry time is not unexpected given that the ink is designed not to dry quickly on the nib... The camera didn't quite capture the color right, so just look at the comparison turquoises like Waterman, Pelikan, or Sheaffer - it's just like those.

I tested the cap off & idle dry time and found this one lasted longer than some previous ones - perhaps due to more humid weather.  At 30 minutes, it seemed to struggle a little on the first stroke, but still wrote a visible line.  60 minutes was about the limit for me - it wrote, but just barely and not acceptably.  After several strokes, it was writing fine, though. The ink was noticeably darker after the idle time.

The microscope slide was one of the most boring I've ever seen.

Errata: In the story, between the white light blinding Quin and the bones clattering, I forgot to write this line, which is important:  Quin felt a surge of power swell around and in him.

Zoomed in photo (The text is too light, almost baby-blue compared to what I see on the page, not exactly, but I don't know how else to describe it.)

Screenshot (This is the closest, but it seems a little flat and maybe too green.)

Scan of Completed Review (This seems a bit too pale and slightly too green to me.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Too neon-like!  The zoom camera really didn't like this ink. :))

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 288µm. With 262 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.)

Nice! The bluest above sort of reminds me of Waterman's South Sea Blue. Is the difference in "greenness" among your shots above due to any difference in their drying times?

Many thanks @LizEF for this bright and joyful  ink review on this cold and post snow storm day 🙂

Yet despite the lightness of the ink you still manage to bring a sense of gravitas to the story and keep us guessing, hoping for the best and praying that the story doesn't demand a sacrifice...

Thanks for bringing so much light to our Tuesdays 🙏🙏🙏

It's almost impossible to distinguish between Waterman, Sheaffer, Pelikan, and this ink.  It's like they all use the same color-ingredient.

No, it's the camera / scanner used to capture the images.  And the absorbent and copy paper may have impacted the color, but mostly, the two cameras and scanner each had their own interpretation of this color.

Personally, unless I needed the Infinity element, I'd go with Waterman Inspired Blue - it's got a nice sheen and maybe some shading (though I'm having a hard time remembering now).

Ooh, that’s pretty! I really like Private Reserve. It’s got good flow. I used to stay away from it in the SITB days, but that seems to be worked out now. I will put it on my list, along with the pearlescent version.  Whether it’s the camera or the ink, I like how it goes from tealish in print to turquoise in cursive on the first photo. I am hopeful for our snek friend after this chapter.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 20 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, FWP Edwards Gardens

MontBlanc 310s F, mystery grey ink left in converter

Sheaffer Jr. Balance ebonized pearl F, Skrip Black

Pelikan M400 Blue striped OM, Troublemaker Abalone

Platinum PKB 2000, Platinum Cyclamen Pink

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

:) Yes, cliffhangers appear to be the fate of this portion of our story... :D

I don't think it does that in real life, but maybe my eyes just aren't that perceptive.  The camera really didn't want to capture this ink.  I recommend sampling first. :)

:)  Indeed, it would be a tragedy to lose our brave little snek.

I am low key on a mission to catch all the turquoise/teal/peacock inks. I probably should be more of a sample person, but it’s too easy to add a bottle to my regular Amazon orders.
It’s more than likely the camera, but I wonder how it would look on papers like Iroful or one of the Cosmo Air types with how it plays with the light.

“modern” was supposed to be “more”

Thanks for this one, @LizEF.  Private Reserve and I have never gotten along.  It could have something to do with my Sinister nature, but there you are.

Not to mention the fact that I prefer lubricated inks, and have a jillion turquoise inks already, including Montblanc Balzac, Skrip, modern and vintage Waterman, Iroshizuku, J Herbin, and three of your comparisons.

Thanks once again for the Tuesday Treat.  Pleeeeez save Ethhhri!  And everyone!  🙏🏻

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:) You're very welcome!  As long as you're not craving that cap-off time, you can safely just resort to almost any other turquoise...

Thank you, @LizEF, for this ink review and for the story part! :) We will have to wait one more week until we know about Essri, will we? ;)

Well, well!, we trust in you @LizEF. ;)

Indeed, all the standard turquoise inks seem to be filled from one big barrel. However, screenshot, scan, magnification (not so clearly) and microscope do show a tiny bit of grey in the turquoise. May this be the difference to all the others?

Infinity in the name and no infinite dry time on paper seems not to fit - a false promise? 🤫:lol:

One life!

Unlike Waterman (and perhaps others, I've forgotten), this one never showed any sheen, or even threatened to.  It also has that long cap-off time, so there have to be differences.  I also can't remember if the cameras hated the other turquoises this much - they really didn't want to capture the right color...

:lticaptd:Perhaps we should write them and propose the "Eternity" line - "Infinity" for "doesn't dry in the pen" and "Eternity" for "never dries on paper" - they could see if Nathan Tardiff will sell some of his secrets... ;)

Pelikan 4001 sheens a bit on the right paper.

Thank you for the review and the story.  I think I can maybe manage to hang in for one more week to find out how Essri is.
