Introducing Myself - Greetings from NE Arkansas

Hello,

 

I am a Canadian recently transplanted to NE Arkansas (not far from Memphis) where I toil in the groves of academe and try to find new ways to keep cool during the southern summer.

 

I have a recently renewed interest in FPs and have found this forum full of interesting, odd and adventurous ideas and suggestions during a couple of weeks of browsing as a guest. It seemed time to come out of the woodwork. I write with a Waterman Carene (black with a F nib) and have just ordered a Sailor 1911 (red with a M nib). Two nice pens = the beginning of a collection?

 

Looking forward to further enjoyable hours on the site.

Your collection is small and I see no mention of inks or storage, you still have time to run and remain free.

If you can't find the strenght then you will sooner or later need a Pelikan.

Not an interesting one I'm afraid, fountainpenjunkie. In my student days I often wrote with cheap and practical FPs, but went through a long period of writing everything directly to computer. I now find that writing by hand helps me think and having a steady income allows me to try nicer pens.

Welcome! From Vancouver (the first one, that is; Washington - see how us damnyanks are? But at least they were both named for the same RN captain.)

 

Couldn't help but notice the first pen you mentioned; excellent choice. I consider myself more of a user than a collector, even though I have two Parkers, a Sheaffer, an Inoxchrom, and five Waterman fps and two Waterman rb/fibre tips. I also have half a dozen inexpensive Chinese pens which, with the help of some FPNers, now all write fairly well, with one nearly as good as the Carene. A few I've had for years, the Waterman and Chinese more recent acquisitions.

 

But I don't think this makes me a true collector. I don't really hanker for an old, say pre-'50's, Waterman, or anything else, for that matter. (Of course, I got a heart murmer when I read the recent Edson review!) I can't speak fluent Mont Blanc, Pelikan, Omas, Montegrappa, etc., ad infinitum. I have never used, or even seen, a bottle of Noodlers.

 

But it's fun. Love to write with them, enjoy reading and learning about them on FPN (a most valuable website,) and even chip in my six bits (darn inflation) now and then.

 

So there is hope for you yet. As you can see, however, there is a down-(up?)side: not being a "collector" is going to save you money? "F'gedaboudit."

Welcome! I came here recently as well with my own rediscovery of FPs.

 

I have, and truly love, a new Carène as well. This is entirely Ghost Plane's fault. (She is unrepentant.)

 

You darned pro writers, you've got the excuse of buying FPs as a "professional tool". Where can I sign up for the interesting writing jobs that require no experience or contacts whatsoever?

Pleased to meet you pen2paper and thank you for the VP suggestion (see how quickly I am adopting the lingo and abbreviations). I looked at the pen and my first thought was: "How odd! It is upside down, doesn't the clip get in the way?" I have since read many comments about it and it is very well thought of by many in the know. I'll have to give it a try out when the occasion presents itself.

Nice to meet you. I grew up in Edmonton and have many fond memories of visits with friends in Calgary - a lovely city! Sadly I haven't had the occasion to visit Alberta for many years: friends and family have all dispersed to other corners of the country.

Very pleased to meet you pakmanpony. Thank you for the exciting news about the pen scene in Little Rock. I will keep my eyes open for announcements of events, and if the pen show does come off will certainly attend. Also pleased to hear that LR has a good pen store. I'm in Jonesboro and have not yet been to LR - this is an entirely new part of the country to me and I have been busy exploring to the east so far. You've given me another reason to plan a trip.
