Best inks that both sheen and shimmer

AndyYNWA

Recommended Posts

I have been away from the fountain pen community for a couple of years, and now when I'm back I've noticed that there has happened quite a lot in the ink market. Quite a few new brands that have popped up in the last couple of years, etc.
But as the topic states; which are the best inks that both sheen and shimmer?

The ones that I have found so far that seems interesting are Jacques Herbin 1670 Émeraud de Chivor (of course) and Ferris Wheel Press Poison Envy.
Any other I should consider? Does Wearingeul have any good ones I should try? Van Dieman's?

Wayfarer is my favorite of their inks, a teal with shimmer than looks pink or violet and it sheens red.

Last year’s Inkvent calendar had a ton of shiny, sheeny inks- my favorite is Upon a Star.  Diamine also has a few others that are simply gorgeous- look up Jack Frost.  I think their Chameleon line both sheens and contains shimmer.

Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl is amazing and scarce.  Take a look at Mountain of Ink and there are ink reviews by property for more ideas.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 30 currently inked pens:

Parker Duofold Centennial IM, RO Rose Gold Antiqua

Parker Duofold Lady needlepoint, MB Cool Grey

Pelikan M800 needlepoint, Kuretake Shikon

Platinum PKB 2000, Platinum Cyclamen Pink

Waterman 52 EF, Herbin Bleu Pervenche

Thanks Penguin!🙂

I have been eyeing Wayfarer, will have to take another look at it.

Will also take a look at the Inkvent inks. I might find something there that appeals to me.

For me, Rouge Hématite by J. Herbin is the perfect ink for sheen and shimmer.  One of the great inks of all time. But shimmer can cover up great sheener, so with RH, I have one bottle with sparkles, and one that I use with the sparkles filtered out.  That way, I get the best of both versions of a splendid ink.

Dominant industry pearl series Lapis lazuli (and maybe other from the same series). Sheens almost like Organics Studio Nitrogen, with some light shimmer on top.

Also smudges less than Nitrogen!

I love Diamine Winter Miracle.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

How does Winter Miracle compare to Poison  Envy? Is Winter Miracle a bit more tamed?

The sheen and shimmer looks really nice.👌 Pity the base colour does nothing for me...😕

Looks interesting, but maybe a bit too sheen crazy... 🤔

I don't have poison envy but Winter Miracle is pretty well behaved. It lubricates fine nibs well, and the shimmer part never clogged a pen (it's very light, not sure if normal or if it's just my bottle).

I currently have it in a Pilot CH912 PO that writes quite dry, and it is a nice match :)
I admit I never tried it with a wide nib (because I don't use that and am desperately trying to get rid of my Sailor Music nib) so maybe it could be a smudger there, if you live in a humid place.

If you use it in a fine but wet pen, the lines will almost look black, especially on cream/ivory paper. I use it at work and nobody ever commented (I am not even sure people here would comment on the most extravagant colours so take that with a grain of salt)!

I  an send you a sample of Dominant Industry Lapis lazuli if you want, I don't see it very often for sale.

Thank you, that’s very kind of you- but I just ordered it from JetPens.  It was their last bottle, so I may take you up on that if it turns out to not be in stock.

  • 1 month later...

If you have the right nib (western M or a wet writer) and paper (Tomoe River is best imho) I still recommend Iroshizuku Yama-budo as a surprise stealth sheen-shimmer ink. When it pools and dries, the magenta turns gold!

Best of all it’s not marketed as such and has the usual great flow qualities of Iroshizuku inks so you can put it in most pens without worry (do note that ur barrel will likely have lingering traces of magenta between ink color changes).

Sheen junkie, flex nib enthusiast, and all-around lover of fountain pens...

Diamine Winter Miracle?

This and EoC were what I had in mind when I saw the subject line. EoC was one of the first inks I bought and it's still delightful. Winter Miracle is on my buy list after I recently gave my sample a close look. It's great.

Yama-Budo is cool too but much more subtle.

Fountain Pen Revolution Galaxy Blue is a nice royal blue with red sheen and silver shimmer. It's not as extreme as EoC or Winter Miracle, but what is? It's also only $10 for 30 mL (current sale price).

Kay Cottee - - Blue base, blue silver shimmer, bright red sheen
Tiger quoll prowl - brown base, gold shimmer, green sheen
Elegant peacock eye - dark purple base, gold shimmer, bronze sheen( have to use a wider nib size)
Moonlite lake - Blue base, shimmer, red sheen (this one is close to EoC but less intense)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
