Some Ink Tests

Some fine nibs might be OK.

Here's the same Platinum BB ink from a Jinhao X159<f>

It doesn't show the blue color like the Kaigelu Long Blade nib did but I'm seeing a reddish color which might be a form of the sheen LTM was looking for.

To try to have a more valid comparison I used the same Kaigelu medium nib in a dip pen handle to compare Sailor Kakitsubata to some similar inks.

I didn't think to include Sailor Souboku which would have been interesting but I have it in other comparisons

Speaking of Souboku, does it deteriorate over time like Platinum Blue Black?

I don't think Souboku will deteriorate like Platinum BB. Maybe some of pigment content will fall out of suspension, but a good shake will probably be enough?

Ah yes, there's the sheen! And some shading, always an interesting combination.

I'm really not big on blue blacks, but for some reason Platinum BB seems to tick most of my cases fo that type of ink. I'm having a love/hate relationship with it at the moment. That said, I'd rather reach for Sailor Illinois 👀

Do I see Shin-Kai trying to outline when applied generously, or is it just wishful thinking?

I agree with you.  Platinum BB appears to be the most dynamic of the group.  I’m busy playing with a sample myself, but I don’t think I’m going to buy a bottle.  I didn’t come close to using up the first bottle I bought years ago.  And bottles were smaller back then.  A better move for inks that deteriorate over time.

Good eye.  It looks like Shin-Kai outlines a little, but not consistently.

Platinum BB deterioration after 20+ years.

This ink is currently in a cart because it’s so beautiful, ruining my no ink buying plans for January.

Very pretty (Lady Emerald) and added to my ever growing list of future purchases, thank you :D

Does it look closer to Waterman Harmonious green or to the Pelikan 🤔

I'll join your January ink moratorium but I have to get 2 more inks first.  😁

Hi LTM

I thought I answered this...  but I don't see the post????

I don't have Harmonious green so I can't answer that.  I was looking for a bright green ink to replace Pelikan Brillant Grun which has been discontinued and I found this on one of JonSzanto' posts.  I really like the way it shades so I ordered a couple more Teranishi inks to see if they shade this well too.

Another ink that shades like this is Noodler's Liberty's Elysium.

I was hoping that Teraishi Taisho Antique Black would shade like Lady Emerald but that was not the case.

As I continued to write with this nib, the shimmer that was stuck in the feed started to come out...  notice the increase in shimmer particles compared to the 1st Antique Black pic

Does anyone know the rate of deterioration of Platinum Blue-Black ink?  How long will a bottle last?

There's a difference in line width and color rendering.  Comparisons made with Medium Jinhao #8 nibs.

I don’t know about Platinum BB in particular, as I have only had it in cartridges, but I have had other iron gall inks and what I do is decant some into a smaller dark glass bottle so the majority of the ink is kept air tight as much as possible. I have had cartridges of Cross (Pelikan) BB and Platinum go bad, but the Cross were decades old and Platinum had a period when the plastic on their cartridges was cracking easily and that led to precipitation.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
