It was the day I posted some pics of a purple Asvine C80, and at the bottom of the post, there was a pic of these boxes:

Testing Etranger di Costarica  paper sent to me by PGC.

The paper is a bright white paper similar in color to Clairefontaine stationary. It had a slightly rough surface feeling to me and for some reason, most of the pens I used, exhibited an increased ink flow which resulted in feathering in about 1/2 the writing examples.

Today I was testing what I thought was Original Tomoe River paper.

I don't know what it is but it's not Orig. TR. Too much feathering.

This is why I sent y’all some, because the claim felt dubious to me, and I wanted more data. It’s late in the game for machine #7.

I will try my largest nibs and wettest inks on the 2026 once my life gets a little less hectic.

I can't thank you enough for sending it...  was definitely worth testing.

What I'm looking for is a white paper that doesn't feather with the Edelstein, Iroshizuku, Waterman and Sailor inks in my favorite pens, and has he ability to display shading, sheening and outlining when available.

In evaluating the Grid TR above, at first I was skeptical that it was TR paper at all, but, as PGC remarked, it could be a version of TR that was sent to the various planner makers, that could be different from the A4 and A5 sheets I've been using.

Anyway, I dug out the notebook I made of the TR paper I bought last year from Yamamoto, that turned out to be from machine # 9, and will run a test using the same pens and inks I used on the suspect grid paper yesterday.

Where the TR from machine #9 came from:

@USG, you should travel to pen shows with your notebooks and display them at a table.  At the top of the hour you could challege people to bring their best paper... and then bring out your Ajisai, Edelstein, and such... to see if it stands the test. :-).

The difference between Ajisai's performance on the "TR Grid" and the original TRS is gob-smacking.

Currently most used pen: Parker 51 Aerometric <F> -- filled with Waterman Mysterious Blue ink.

LOL.....funny scenario.  Hahaha.... 😀

It's not the ink, it's the paper.

It's not that I'm using exotic inks with obscure formulations, these are time tested inks from major brands, that just happen to be in some of my favorite pens.  I'm sure there are other other inks that would have a similar result.

What I'm interested in is a white paper that doesn't feather and displays nuances like sheening, shading and outlining with my pens and inks.  (ymmv)

I'm going to re-post what I said privately...

'I don’t blame the ink. I chalk it up to suboptimal paper.  Why bother with that stuff when there’s perfectly good alternatives.  As you can see, even the ubiquitous Tomoe River-S blows that stuff out of the water…. And that goes for all the big name Japanese papers I tried.  Not one of them could compete with Tomoe River-S.  You really have to give Sanzen a lot of credit for being able to develop the “S” version of Tomoe River paper.'

'I would like to see someone pick up the mantel for the recently discontinued Cosmo Snow, because supplies are running out and what’s left, like with Original TR, is not up to the standards of the original issue.'

I had NO idea that Asa Gao had sheen to it :o.

When I started here on FPN, that was a lot of people's go-to blue.  But I tried it and it was very drippy and  after about a page of writing, I would watch a LARGE drop of ink roll down the nib and go splat on the page (I think I had it in a Noodler's Konrad), and then a few minutes later I'd have that happen again.  And decided that while the color was okay, there were blue inks I liked better and which BEHAVED better.

Hi ISR

I didn't have any drippy problems with Asa-Gao, but I have pilot ink in a Pilot pen.  In terms of sheen, maybe try some Iroful or Cosmo Snow paper to bring out the nuances?
