The best pens for writing

I have two vintage pen/pencil sets that I use almost exclusively during the week, and both pens work every time. One's a 1948 P51 Aero with a med. nib, and the other's a mid-50s Sheaffer Sentinel snokel with an XF Triumph nib. Sweet, sweet writers both of them. Oh, and the pencils work pretty consistently, too.

I have a Binderized Omas Arco that gets used often, and I have a Sheaffer Triumph with a Tardif stub music nib that gets used once/month when I pay my bills. It's filled with Noodlers legal lapis, and that thing starts up each and every time. Every month when I take it out to pay bills I expect it to be dry as a bone, but it never ceases to amaze me.

I just like a list of what people think are the very best writing pens, no matter age, price or brand. The pens that outclass the rest when writing is the only criteria.

Very rare but the best: Paper Mate Monogram. Very good writers are also Parker Classic GT, and (the old) Parker 45 (F).

Obviously this is a matter of personal choice and everyone has made good suggestions. One choice I've not seen in the suggestions - or maybe I missed it - for sheer workhorse capability - the Pelikan M200. Not overly expensive, writes first time, every time even after setting for weeks; holds a lot of ink, and you can get custom nibs for a very reasonable price from several of the nibmeisters. I have several and they are all inked, all the time.

I'm currently carrying the tortoise 200 with a .7mm cursive italic nib by Richard B. - a sweet pen that makes even my poor penmanship sit up and take notice.

Good luck in your quest. And, BTW - the "51" is pretty hard to beat for your criteria.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

The best I have, the one that works everytime, and works well is the Sailor. 1911, or 1911M. Best nib I have used. No skipping, no stalling, no burping, no affiliation, just satisfied customer.

"LIFE………….is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - WOW - What A Ride!"

Of course not...the writer inquired after FOUNTAIN PENS WITH WHICH TO WORK  , not MEDIOCRE EXPLODING PLASTIC/BIT OF METAL STICKING OUT THE END LIFESTYLE ORNAMENTS...

Yeah, but how do you REALLY feel? (Sorry, just couldn't control myself.)

i would say the best writing pen is the one that feels good in your hand and has a perfect (to you) nib.

i know, pretty obvious. :P

Obvious, but worth repeating: to me, the best pen for writing is first and foremost the pen that best fits your hand and gripping style. The rest can often be adjusted to a satisfactory degree for most decent pens.

It'll be awhile before I can buy those but I can still research for other great writers. That brings me to the Vanishing Points and the Lamy 2000's. Good writers I'm sure but do they deserve to be in the top class of fine writing instruments?

...I didn't include the Vanishing Point or Lamy 2000 because I've read mixed things about them as well as the Pilot Bamboo and others.

I don`t own either pen, but I have spoken to a lot of people who do, especially while running the Most Popular EDC Pen poll on fpn a few weeks ago.

- The 2000 is a great pen, but there have been reports of poor quality control and leaking sections recently.

- The VP is *the* most widely used pen by forumites. More people here carry it everyday than even the Pel M800 or Parker 51. Given the number of pens in use by demanding, finicky, talkative writers, the VP generates an astonishingly low number of complaints. Adding in its toughness, excellent value interchangeable nibs, ready for instant use retractability, and astonishingly low US price, it definitely deserves to be in any short list. It really is the true successor to the Parker 51 as a writing tool.

You were wondering about the Pilot VP-well in my eyes its not all its cracked up to be,I didnt enjoy it and everntualy sold it.

As for favorite writers well its hard but to make a long list very very short I would put:

1.OMAS PARAGON (old Style)-in my eyes this pen is the absolut best writer.

2.Pelikan M800 comes second,simply excellent writer.

3.Mont Blanc 146 is third and even though I like the 149 better the 146 is better for everyday writing.

Respect to all

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
