Paper ID Help

Can anyone please help identify this paper manufacturer? I would like to purchase matching envelopes for it, but I don’t have a corresponding box. Does anyone recognize this emblem?

Agreed - the logo is Kimberly-Clark which appears to own Neenah. You can find a similar logo (but not the "Classic Laid" words) here: https://watermarks.info/bus.php?tx=&a=s&t=a&s=7&db=i&i=on&o=n&c=&pw=on&v=0&n=20&sk=0&l=i#:~:text=103 • [198]-,Neenah Bond,-104 • [228] Neenah
Neenah Bond watermark

You can also see an identical example of "Classic Laid" (but no logo or brand indication) on the same page.

Well, I tried Google. What did you type in. “Watermark” then a description of the logo?

I tested a few samples of their cotton paper and posted the results here:

Not likely you are near Columbus Ohio USA, but, if so, I have samples. Most of my samples are large, as in not the standard letter size.

Define large A3, A3+ or larger ie A2 and up

@pitonyak I’m not all that au fait with us paper sizes or even the old imperial paper sizes that were used in uk. I have to go with metric ISO standard sizes ie A4 A5 etc

The box is about 13" x 20" so probably roughly A3 in size. They are located in the US, so probably not strictly A3. I assume at least as close to A3 as A4 is to Letter size.

They sell samples and different samples come in different sizes and there are generally 5 sheets per sample. This is not the size I would have purchased for my own use unless I wanted to cut them down and bind them myself I think, but they worked just fine for testing.

For fountain pens, my preference was Classic Crest

https://www.neenahpaper.com/brands/classic-crest-papers

They sell swatch books for about $10, something they did not do when I last looked (a few years back).

I do not know if they still allow you to purchase samples of specific paper, I assume that they do but I did not see it with a quick look.

IMO "B+" would be a more appropriate name.  I understand that both dimensions are larger than A3, so "A3+" isn't a horrible name.  But the origin of 13x19 is that it's an extra inch on each side of ANSI "B" sized paper (11x17) so that you can do full size 11x17 prints and trim it down (or bind and trim down) to a standard size.  13x19 is not something you'll commonly find in a US office supply store, but if you're ordering paper from a paper supplier it _is_ a very common size.  You'll notice that on the Neenah website above that 13x19 is more common than 11x17.

ETA: For whatever it's worth, ANSI paper sizes are "A", "B", "C", etc, where "A" is 8.5x11, B is 11x17, continuously doubling the short side just as you would do with ISO paper sizes.  The difference being the progression is to double the paper instead of halve the paper.  And of course they're weird imperial units and non-constant aspect ratio.

I remember being able to buy "E" sized paper back in the 80s, but I think that has been completely replaced by wide format printers where you buy paper in continuous rolls.  It's still pretty common, though, for the printer panel on the computer to have "ANSI E" (etc) as a predefined size.

@XYZZY thanks for the useful info, super A3 and A3+ is a quick I think of uk desktop printer sizes as well as iso standards. When I want a 16x12 photo print or 17x13 depending on frame and mount size I have to use A3 plus paper.

also this site is useful in explaining paper sizes https://www.papersizes.org/a-paper-sizes.htm

best regards

Apologies it took me so long (4 months +) to reply. I am glad to hear that the paper is fountain pen friendly. I am not surprised as Neenah card stock is still considered FP friendly despite not being specifically made for fountain pens. Also, Kimberly Clark paper lab wipes are pretty much standard for lint and residue free applications. In other words, they know their paper!

I don't recall precisely what I Googled as I had to follow a few links. However I did start with "Kimberly Clark Classic Laid paper watermark" and went from there, adding the word "Neenah" when I learned it was owned. That search led me to the watermark database but not to the picture. I did a "Find in page" and searched for "Neenah", but ended up just looking through the list visually (IIRC) adn comparing them. It was fascinating and easy to get lost in that for a while, hehe.

I'm sure you know that "laid" finish paper referred to the ridges on the sheets created in the manufacturing process by the drying screens.  There have been comments in the past the paper is too rough for EF or calligraphy nibs.  More modern laid finishes I've had are smoother than older sheets.  I've never used EF nibs so not an issue for my scrawl.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
