Isn’t that just an optical illusion caused by the shadow of the nib-collar?

I think that those pens had their nibs marked in Pelikan’s usual way - the grade (in this case ‘M’) ‘underneath’ the company’s logo on the nib.

The nib on the pen in your picture is just set quite deep, so that the ‘M’ is relatively close to the nib-collar.

The shadow makes it look like it has been engraved on the front end of the nib-collar - but the engraving would then have to be a ‘W’, rather than an ‘M’.

Yes. It does look odd though.

The illusion is in photo #2 of 5.

Zoom in at photo #1, and all becomes clear.

Interpreting photos on eBay can be misleading in so many ways. I am often confused by reflections of the lighting setup used.

Ah, thanks folks! Your theory makes far more sense than mine.

I'll have to look at my '50-54 pens to see if any have that....

I do have a '54 transition 400, with nib marking, no body marking. From my understanding the '55 400n is nib marked, like the 400nn's. The other ones are body marked. Except for the post-war 100n, which only has a small k on it.

My Ibis is also body marked.

The 100n and Ibis were made into 1954.

My 500 doesn't have that either and that would have been the one I'd thought could of, because the piston cap has a rolled gold piston cap. The nib i eyeballed to a OBBB,. It is a 30 degree grind and a maxi-semi-flex nib. (I have four OBB's.)

My other couple '50-54  400's are body marked. The 2 400nn's and the 120 and the 140 are nib marked, no hidden marks.

One of my 400nn's is a FK...American Bump Under ...not a stub nib. That was a surprise in a half.
