Favorite ink to test a new pen?

I looked for Mysterious blue, but the two sources I checked were out.

Thank you, I am excited to try a new pen out.  Especially since I typically purchase Japanese pens.

Any other tips or recommendations for my new 51?

Thank you all for being so helpful!

Hi cbrown,

I'm not surprised they were sold out; that speaks to the ink's popularity.

Nothing comes to mind at this moment, the great thing about 51 Aerometrics is they kinda take care of themselves... they're the lowest maintenance vintage pen I can think of... right now.

The only thing I'll say is you might want to get a salad spinner... if you securely tie the filler/section to the rack, the centrifugal force of the spinning will sling out every dram of ink in the pen. But as long as you're using legacy ink brands, you can go several refills before you have to flush it... UNLESS YOU CHANGE COLOR OR BRAND... then give it a good flush first.

Enjoy your 51. :D

Yea: Enjoy it! It’s one of the greatest pens ever made.

The most gentle ink I know of—Waterman Serenity Blue. Whatever the pen, I can be pretty darn certain that that ink won’t make anything worse. It’s easy to clean, well behaved, and readily available at a decent price. However, unless there’s a particularly good reason to (e.g., a celluloid pen with great transparency or something of high sentimental value), I rarely use it beyond testing/tuning.

I’m the exact same with serenity blue.

I also used to use the same pelikan pen for testing new inks for the same reason but quit doing so otherwise I’d rarely get to use a different pen.

I usually have a good idea of what ink I want to use in a pen I've ordered so I just start with that. No point testing with an ink that works in any pen only to find out that the ink I want to use doesn't work well with it.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I'm kind of like that.  I'm too impatient to test a new pen with a tester ink, or even to first clean it (assuming it's a new pen).  I unbox the pen, ink it with what I want, and that usually works out fine.

If it doesn't work out then I drain it, clean it well, and use Serenity Blue.  If ok then I go back to the ink that I had there in the first place.

In other words, the advice is here all seems sound, but it's my fallback and not my starting point.

Pelikan Royal Blue

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
