Platinum 3776 Penography

Recommended Posts

Some time ago I began assembling information for a mook, a penography of the Platinum 3776 and collected information on many early and some recent models. A good number never made it into official catalogues and even official catalogues from the 1980s and 1990s are impossible to find. Included are images of numerous makie models that very rarely come up for sale. Even a few of the models with lower sales prices are uncommon. Have also included some interesting modern models.

The work is incomplete as older models continue to be discovered and Platinum has gotten into the SE and LE business that adds a good number of new models that were of little interest when the effort began.

If anyone is interested in a copy please email me. The mook is only available in pdf format. If enough interest it can be posted on my cloud site.

It is very nicely done. Every 3776 collector will need it.

It reminds me the beginning of my Parker 75 and 180 collection. I thought, I would be able to easily collect all models until I found out the vast number Parker had produced and the prices paid for the rarer models.

Meanwhile I have sold all 75s and most 180s. Instead, I stay with my Waldmann Precieux models.

What, please, is a "mook?" It is not a word I have come across before in a publishing context (at first I thought it was a typo, but you wrote it twice, so I guess not). Thank you.

Mook is an abbreviation for Magazone - Book. M+ook = Mook. It is commonly used in Japan for short standard paper-size books that deal with subject matter.

I hesitate to call my penography a book. With the right attention, some effort, and loving care it can easily become one.

Thank you all for requesting copies of my poor effort to compile information on the history of the 3776. For those that received or will request copies of the file please do not be disappointed. It is a incomplete work. Got busy with work, got bored, and was no longer intereested. Many excuses.

Call it what you will, despite what the file may be named, it is NOT A MOOK!

It is merely a compilation of catalogue pages, advertisements, and photographs of a number of models.

Many models including those from my collection were never photographed and included. Platinum made quite a few pens that might be considered limited or special editions of very short runs and marketed for very short time frames that are not in catalogues. They may, in fact, have catalogue numbers but do not appear in print - as best as I have been able to discover. They are not included. If someone is really interested images of some are in my dropbox file here: https://app.box.com/s/m72dxgpyotxpx2w7z3r6qvxpb9h79afh They are unorganized and from many sources. Have fun!

The focus is not on the many Platinum Century models. It is on models produced generally before 2000 and for the Japanerse market. The collecting effort was directed towards makie models that had ebonite feeds. Having all of the ReCelluloid models was also a goal. Two proved incredibly elusive.

It includes some information on post-2000 special edition models. This was the result of becoming bored with my effort and not knowing where to go with the older models.

There are many unknown models from all the Japanese pen makers.  Tracking them down is a labor of love and probably one of unrequited love at that.  Efforts such as yours help fill the gaps and hopefully inspires others to continue in the search.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
