Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Robert Oster Aussie Brown

This is review #204 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was super quick and easy.  Except the zoom, all images, even the video, look *too* red.  It's a brown ink that leans a little red, not a red ink that leans brown. 😕

Screenshot: The ink seems maroon - it's brown, just red-leaning, not red.  Text is also too dark.

Scan: The scanner rendered this ink very magenta-y.  It is a red-leaning brown, but not *that* red.  I tried to correct, but it's still off.

Zoom: This is the closest, and quite close, so go by this image.

Absorbent Paper: Not too far off, but the color is more uniform to the naked eye.

Copy Paper: Also pretty close.

The line width measurement is one of the lines used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 270µm. (For the curious, with 204 inks measured, the average line width is 294µm.)

The microscope image is from the corner of the cover slip.  Colors are close to accurate.  Just off screen was a bright, light blue splotch (darker than the bits of turquoise in the image).  Very colorful ink!

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Thank you @LizEFfor the review and for the story snip that reminds me so much at (stereo)typical fountain pen user's fear: "What if the ink doesn't lay nicely on the paper? What if the paper is immune to the ink? What if my pens nib breaks?"

(However, I always was able to withdraw my nib from the paper .... ;))

Brown seems to be a complexly composed colour. Red and green are obvious ingredients, while the second can also be mixed from blue and yellow.  And so there are nice brown inks and boring brown inks around. Aussie Brown seems to belong to the first group.

I was able to touch Robert Osters inks with the Sydney Darling Harbour I used recently - and I'm positively surprised about ink behaviour and colour interpretation. While brown is not among my favourites, I will keep an eye open for Robert Oster inks.

One life!

Thanks for the great review! I like this one and, though it's probably not close, I feel like it looks like the color of kangaroo fur, which would make sense since it is an 'Aussie' color. Won't pursue it since I already have browns that are close enough to this one.

BTW, on my laptop screen, none of the images (except the 100x image) look red at all - just distinctly brown. The lighter parts of the zoomed in image look to lean slightly orange.

Brown ink is one of those "who woulda thought" colors for me - turns out I really like them.  My preference is shifting from red-leaning to yellow-leaning and neutral, though.  Ink preferences always surprise me!  So many inks, so little time. :)

Fascinating!  This is almost, but not quite, enough to make me give up on color correction altogether and just let the images stand the way they come out of the camera. :)

What a lovely review and what climax

This inks seems to be quite contained as it's on the narrow spectre.

And what a flashy microscope it's the reminiscent of a lovely maple, in our street, turning yellow with reddish spots..... :)

It's the Grand Canyon!  With a lake of ice!   Way cool.

(And enough feathers to mend Makhabesh should he need it).

I like brown inks.  This did not look maroon or red in the images to me, so brown must be tough to photograph.

It seems to have some shading.

Love the story, love the review.  Living with doubts is a way of life.  Thanks, @LizEF, and please keep them coming.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Yes.  I like that in an ink.

:)  Good comparison!  This ink does like to show off, doesn't it?  I'm not surprised - Robert Oster seems to love coming up with more colors than you'd think possible.

This particular brown was hard to photograph, though not all have been.  And yes, lovely shading - I like that about Robert Oster inks - lots of shaders.

Thanks as usual for the comprehensive review.  Looks a fair amount like vintage Quink Brown.

My wallet, of course does NOT thank you.... :headsmack:
