Please ID this Platinum lady's pen set

Not in my possession (but could be).

EDIT: Looks like there might be a 4th pen (or something else) that's missing? Looks like an empty space on the right side of the plastic clip that attaches the pens to the box?

It does look like there's an empty space. What could that be for? Fountain, biro, pencil...fibre tip?

Nice looking set. What sort of date would you think?

Upon further inspection I wonder if the pens are not placed in the box clip correctly. Based on similar sets I have I don't think the pens should be so close together in the photo above. So maybe the set is complete (?). If not, then, since there's already a fountain pen, pencil, and ballpoint, perhaps a rollerball? I really have no idea.

It's really hard for me to say. I'm really unfamiliar with Platinum's products, vintage or otherwise, outside of their fountain pens, so the pencil and ballpoint give me no clues. I am not an authority, for sure, but I believe this fountain pen's basic design shape, with essentially the same nib and section design, as well as other elements, including the clip and finials, started in the late 1960s and continued into the 1980s, at least. At the moment I don't recall seeing another Platinum with a relief finish, as this one has. At least it looks to me to be in relief (is there a name for this type of finish?). To me, the flowers on the case say '1970s'.

I've Googled my fingers off for this one and have come up empty.

Some more photos. The box-top has a wool-tweed look and the whole package is very attractive, I think. I don't know what the "10" on the nib is about - I don't recall seeing that on any other Platinums.

I have three examples of this same design with a different finish. The silver-colored pen and the orange, cashew-lacquer (sort of a 'poor man's' urushi) pen appear in scans of a 1970s Platinum catalog that's available somewhere online. I believe the models labelled 'Bonito' went into the 1980s.

Probably "Platinum 唐草(ka-ra-ku-sa)".

Japanese sellers say it's in the 70's and 80's.

I have seen the black version.

Thanks - that might be it. If not, it is similar. The English translation of 唐草 is 'arabesque' which is a term I have seen before to describe these styles of ornate patterns on pens.

When I search on "Platinum 唐草" or "Platinum arabesque pen" (both without quotes) I don't see any in this frosted champagne color with the same nib. Nor do I see one with a white section.

Do you know the Japanese for a set of three pens such as this - something like a gift set?

It is a model that pays attention every time it appears. I think there are many silver versions and this version.

The price tag sticker at that time was printed with 6,500円, so you can see that it was more expensive than the Parker 50 Falcon.

I didn't notice the ballpoint pens and pencils because most of them are sold by fountain pens alone.

Every fountain pen usually has a pair of ballpoint pens and pencils, so I think it's okay to have one.

I have seen a fountain pen alone with a transparent lid in a plastic case.

I think it's difficult to make a clear decision as to whether the box or pencil case is original.

Are there any letters or logos associated with Platinum?

It's a good question. I asked the (Thai) owner if there was any text or marking on the box and she did not reply. My Thai language skill is pretty rudimentary and her English not good so there may be some misunderstanding involved. :)

If I were to design that pencil case, I would press the Platinum logo and the same arabesque pattern as the pen.

If so, a kogai in a matching finish would have been really cool. Have you seen pen sets with a kogai?

sadly, no

I was just being a smartass 😁

Rollerball in Japan? No, I don't think so. I have never seen a 4-pen set. Assume it is complete.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
