Plating corrosion on recent Souveran white cap special editions?

Intensity

Recommended Posts

I’ve been researching the M600 series, particularly the “white” series (Turquoise, Violet-White, Green-White, etc), and I found some user comments that concerned me.  For example there were owners who received their pen brand new, but already with discoloration on the two piston cap rings.  Those are not near any ink, and in general it should not be possible for a brand new pen, so it seems like there are/were some QC problems recently with the plating.

Edit: example discoloration on matal trim rings:

Has anyone here had similar issues with your M600/M605 special edition pens, particularly the Violet-White, Green-White, or Turquoise?

I’m aware of the cap cracking issue with the off-white plastic used for these pens, too.  It was rumored to be solved after the early Tortoiseshell-White M400 problems, but I don’t think it has been for consecutive models.  Certainly plenty of reports about Turquoise-White having cracks, some on freshly out of the box pens. At least I’ve still read of cap cracking as recently as with the Violet-White edition, one behind the latest Green-White.

(Also a warning to M605 White striped owners (or really any Pelikan with binde barrels): don’t submerge your pen into an ink bottle past the section; there’s a graphic example of someone’s pen soaking up blue Iroshizuku ink right into the binde, behind the white stripes.)

The only issue I have had with brassing and or plating. Is on a m101n Blue Marble version.  It has plating issues on the cap rings. All of my other Pelikans are fine (own about 30).

As far as the white m600 white models. I own all except the pink( traded it), and the green. No issues.

My m400 white tortoise was my day writer for about 3 years, and still looks pristine. Except for some staining on the threads.

Thanks!

By the way, is that thread staining easy to clean off with soap and a soft toothbrush?

M605 White striped owners

I'm at the point where I'm considering buying a sacrificial M605 White striped. The first ink I put into my original was Star Ruby and the rubber on the piston immediately got stained. Thankfully Pelikan swapped it out but I will never ink that pen up.

Also can confirm the micro-cracks on the M600 Turquoise white also happened to me too.

Anyway, onto the topic, if there is any staining on metal decorations I would get a jewelers cloth (silver or gold cleaning cloth) and it will probably clean it. I had what looked like corrosion on a M800 Technology and the cleaning cloth did wonders to it.

Oh that’s great to know about the jewelers cloth and the staining possibly being superficial.  I’m trying to remember where I saw the post and photos I’m referring to with new pen ring discoloration.  It was either on instagram, or maybe reddit, or even here.  I should have bookmarked it for the link.  I just remember the rings had a kind of rusty-reddish cast to them in spots.  Someone got a pen in that state from a store and gad to send it back for an exchange.

Edit: I found that post with photos

Never bothered to do so, so I would not know. I use about a full pistol fill of ink daily. Personally I would it too time consuming to clean. Ink on the threads does not really bother me.

I have had plating issues with Sailor before. Particularly the 1911 with 14k nib. Some of my 1911's with the 14k option show corrosion on the cap band.

For what its worth, I think plating issues on Pelikan pens are an extremely rare occurrence. Remember, people usually post when an item is defective, and hardly never when it works properly. Except, in the case of Visconti.

Since the section doesn’t get stained, it should be safe to assume the ink comes off from the threaded part with some soap and light brushing.

I’ve been using the m605 green-white extensively to compose essays for more than half a year, fortunately nowhere on the white resin is showing any sign of hairline crack developing, the resin remains unscathed under harsh mistreatment, to my surprise, the palladium-plated cap ring corrodes, some grey circumferential oxidation layers are visible if one were to examine the ring vigilantly, however it’s far-fetched as the section ring, which is in constant contact with Sailor Kiwaguro, stays undisturbed and shiny like the first day I received the pen

Hmm that’s odd indeed.  I think some plating defects are to blame.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
