Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Van Dieman's Ink Sweetheart Cherry

This is review #176 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy. This color is really hard to capture. The scanner made it almost hot pink. It's very muted (not bright). It leans orangish to my eyes, and yet in some lights, it seems to have a pinkish hue. (Apparently, I have color perception problems.) To solve this oddity, I did a chromatogram. It shows pink, orangish, and a neon yellow that seems almost greenish in some light! The orangish color between the pink and yellow is pretty much what the ink looks like for me.

I've done the best I could to adjust the colors, but there's no telling whether it'll look right. Since I have a set of Pantone color swatches, I checked and it's really close to Pantone color DS 77-3 U (C10 M75 Y75, K0) - FWIW. The zoom is the only picture that looked somewhat right without color correction, and it's pretty close. The screenshot and absorbent paper images are a little too red. The scan seems too pink. On my phone, everything looks way too saturated...

The line width measurement is one of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 360µm, with ten divisions of 36µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 360µm. (For the curious, with 176 inks measured, the average line width is 291µm.)

Under the microscope there were hot pink flecks sparsely scattered through the ink, but I couldn't get the camera to distinguish, so I didn't include an image.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great job @LizEF

This actually looks like a very nice brick-ish colour. Reminds me somewhat of ancient Copper.

I always though shading inks had long dry times (In my experience). But for an ink that doesn't shade to have such a long dry-time, it's a pity. It seems almost pointless.

Pegasus? Zowie... that's a new twist.... ;) :D

It's a difficult color to capture or describe.  Orange and pink and yeah, a bit of brick...

I can't say I've noticed that correlation.  It might be interesting to try to analyze my data and see if there's a relation.  Quantifying or rating shading is difficult though, so I haven't been diligent about it in my database...

Let's sum up:

1. Cool color.

2. Cooler chroma.

3. Cool story.

4. Eternal dry time.

I like brickish colors, but I have a lot of them (and created a few).  Inks with the special NeverDri ®️ feature are just not in my line-up.  But I love the story, and your reviews.

Thanks!  🎉

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

This one looks worth a $3 spend for a sample but a bottle would be foolish.  Thanks for the review!

Thank you @LizEF for introducing this ink and for keeping Quin safely mounted on a winged horse (are they all called Pegasus?). Poor exhausted Makhabesh!

The cherry colour is highly interesting, the ink seems to have low surface tension.

However, the colour I see in the zoomed photo looks like a twin to P. Edelstein Garnet (another red I love).

Makes me looking forward to the upcoming cherry season ... hmmm. 🍒

One life!

I like it, but already have Edelstein Garnet and Herbin Rouge Grenat, which are similar enough.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

:D You're welcome!  As far as I know, Pegasus is the only name for a winged horse (or was the only winged horse?).  If there's another name, I don't know it.

Yes, lots of flapping!  Hard to say whether all that resting on Quin's shoulder was good (saving his energy) or bad (letting his muscles waste away)...

Yes, it did spread quite wide!  I have Monteverde Garnet, and PenBBS #234 Garnet, but not Pelikan's.  So, I guess I won't be doing any direct comparison - not this year, anyway...

 The relatively fat line would discourage me from getting this ink, and I prefer my reds brighter - despite the bright colors in the chroma, this ink seems rather muted / flat to me.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
