Why did my LAMY start bleeding through paper?

Noodler's has some of the most featherocious of inks I ever have used. The worst IMX thus far was Borealis Black, which I diluted, 4 parts ink to 5 parts distilled water in an attempt to limit this behavior.  It was somewhat successful.  This works because you're reducing the concentration of surfactants, which make the ink flow more easily and spread out more.  And because Borealis Black has such a heavy dye load, there was little reduction in apparent color saturation/ density.  (I have also diluted Bad Black Moccasin at 1:1 and 2:1, and Heart of Darkness at 3:2.)  Lamy black, which is far less saturated, would become much less dark with that sort of dilution.  But you might try diluting into a sample vial at assorted ratios, and see if that helps.

IMO, one has not maximized their skill and mastery of Noodler's inks until they have mastered the art of diluting Noodler's inks.

I guess I've been lucky.  The only one for me that REALLY needed diluting was Bay State Blue -- because it feathered so badly (its use is now relegated to a Noodler's Charlie eyedropper, because:

          (1) free pen;

          (2) clear barrel so I can eyeball the amount of distilled water vs. ink; and

          (3) don't care if it stains (which, of course, being BSB, it will :rolleyes:.

I've tried diluting Kung Te Cheng, but when I do it loses the lovely dark indigo color, and just becomes one more purple ink.  I have also tried using Vanness White Lightning to combat KTC's paint-like flow and general cloggy-ness, but that didn't really work either. :(  I guess next time I put it into a pen I'll try Photo-Flo and see if that works any better.  But I haven't really found a pen that it works well in any better than one of the resin Konrads: I had hopes for the ebonite Boston Safety, but nope.  And I tried it in a Noodler's Charlie and as the ink got used up I started having  "eyedropper burping" issues.  When I get done with the fill of HoD in the acrylic Konrad, I MAY see if it works better in that pen (but given how much HoD burps into the cap when the fill gets low, I'm not really holding my breath on that).

This reddit post has links to some good nib-tuning resources.  (You should be able to read regardless of whether you have a reddit account.)

Thank you, I’m going to try it out.

Wow, I've never tried diluting an ink with water, for some reason I thought that it can make the ink feathering worse. Going to try some Noodlers inks that have been problematic.
