Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Van Dieman's Ink Hanging Lake

This is review #165 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy with plain water. This is the sort of not-quite-right blue that I collect while on the hunt for the perfect blue... It leans slightly green. Most of my similar inks are more green, or lean grey, or lean purple, or... :) The color is like a cross between Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-kai and Tsuki-yo. Once again, it's like the camera ignored the green lean. The color of the ink in the AP and the zoom is too light. In the scan, the darkness is about right, but the color is still off (too turquoise?).  The screen capture gives the closest impression both in color and darkness, though it's hard to see color in the text itself...

Errata: "with is friends" should be "with his friends".

This video includes an important warning for people in the state of California.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great job @LizEF for an eternity ink

In the olden days they used blotters instead of waiting for ink to dry. :D

California resident do not bathe/ drink this ink ;)

Is that a solar powered magical carpet.... I wonder why this episode attracted the planes hanging over :)

I found a link for Tasmania's Dove "Hanging" lake for anyone interested

Good thing - otherwise they may have worn their fingers to the bone...

Pfff.  In the state of California, bathing is known to cause cancer...

Spy planes, clearly!  Hoping to learn more about this flying carpet. ;)

Beautiful!  Thank you. :)  I've never been to the upside down part of the world, but they certainly have some beautiful places - should have gone back in my traveling days.

Oooo, a magic ink with patented Never-Dri!  Quick thinking, Quin!  Maybe he should sic this ink on the goats.

I got Pelham Blue.  Similar color.  Behaves itself.

Liz, even when it's an ink I would nevereverever use… your reviews make me happy.  😄

Thanks!

Thank you @LizEF - this one made me laugh out loud!

It also made me glad that I've never bothered to put a bottle in any of my Van Dieman's orders - the colour didn't call to me, and the saturation is way too high for my taste.

(and I like Pelham Blue too!)

 Blue-stained goats, always smudging on everything.  Someone might mistake them for Smurfs! ;)

It does seem strange that it takes so long to dry.  A few inks I've reviewed lately have done this.  It was enough to make me wonder if I did something, even though I know I didn't.  Anywho, somewhere there must be someone who likes smudges, and we can let them love this ink in our places... :)

Hanging Lake reminds me of ballpoint ink so it has always been an easy skip.  Thanks for the confirmation from your closeups!

Can't say I need more aircraft, there are six airports near me, three international and three private/small aircraft. There is always something overhead but alas, no magic carpets yet.

Hmm.  Can't say it reminds me of ballpoint ink, but note what I said above about how the cameras didn't pick up the greenish part of the ink (not that it's green, just a green-leaning blue).  But then, it's also not terribly unique (except the Never-Dri).

 I've got one of each (international, small/private, military) and that's more than enough for me!  If you do spot magic carpets, particularly with goats on them, we want pictures! ;)

I have to say, "Me, too!" to both comments.  I always enjoy your reviews, but this one was particularly happy-making, even though I have no need for a never-drying ink.

I've been experimenting with my (real) microscope, seeing whether it would show the writing on paper, and made this image, which shows that the line width for this ink is ~300μm...

large.VanDiemansInkHangingLakeLW.jpg.1dbe84bf70e47600defe9babbfdd8b66.jpg

This is from the review paper, so that's Rhodia there with all them fibers... :D  The black grid is 100μm / square.  The white 300μm scale was easier to read in the microscope's imaging software...

I'm also playing with putting ink on a slide, letting it dry, and photographing that.  We'll see whether these microscope pictures become a normal part of reviews.  Feedback welcome! :)

You are doing great work!

That photo from the microscope is (to me) unexpectedly lovely and fascinating.  I am a little in awe of anyone who can use one of those things, anyway--I totally faked my way through everything microscope-related in my high-school science classes, because I could never manage to adjust the instrument so as to see whatever it was I was supposed to see.

It's a lot harder than it looks!  Shallow depth of field means you only get one little "layer" in focus.

Ohhh look!  An art.

  Maybe if I'd left the grid and scale off - then it would be pretty cool.  I do think the pattern of the Rhodia paper fibers is really interesting.  And I lucked out getting color - the camera really does NOT pick up color well, so future / additional images may not look so nice.

I'll take it the way it is.  Ordo Ab Chao.

Add lightness and simplicate.
