OOps, if I had read all the posts I would have seen that you were both discussing the problem.

So, here's what I need to know, how do I get from https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/gallery/image/9657-f4bcac90/ to here https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/fpngallery/monthly_2022_02/large.f4bcac90.jpg.d702b050bdf3c816504cfbb908c9d63c.jpg?

I modified the first post to place on hold while we figure this out.

I don't know how to either navigate to the correct gallery or get the correct URL. I know you know how to do this.  :)

OK, I've just tried Safari, Chrome, and Firefox browsers on my Mac, and my conclusion is that the forum's software is seeing to it that there is no easy (or easier) way for users to do this.

In Chrome:

  1. Go to https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/gallery/image/9657-f4bcac90/.
  2. Right-click on the image.
  3. Select ‘Inspect’ from the drop-down menu.
  4. Expand the line (that is already highlighted) that reads, “▸<div>_</div> == $0” by clicking on the right-pointing triangle.
  5. Move the mouse pointer over the URL in the “src=” attribute.
  6. Right-click on the URL.
  7. Select ”Copy link address” from the drop-down menu
  8. https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/fpngallery/monthly_2022_02/large.f4bcac90.jpg.d702b050bdf3c816504cfbb908c9d63c.jpg” is then in your operating system's clipboard, ready to be pasted anywhere.

How did you do it so easily? Should I switch from my mac to a PC or to a chomebook?  I have those too.

I did it the first time exactly as described above.

That's why I ventured that it'd be awfully labour-intensive to (extract the information for Column D and) create that table.

Oh my I think I've got it. I took the images from Liz's post and did the right click to copy the URL, give me a few minutes and let me see if I can get it to work.

Okay, I got it working!  The trick was when Liz put the images into the post at the end, I was able to right click and copy the image address to paste into the Other Media URL upload.

The other trick is that we will need to be sure that the poster puts the images in the same order, otherwise, it will cause all kinds of confusion.  Also, as one gallery fills, I can create more galleries so that won't use anyone else's space since I'm granted unlimited space.

@A Smug Dill and @LizEF you two have been amazing!  Can I now con you in to writing better instructions?  I think I can do the edits one per day if other people get ahead.

Note that my instructions assume using a regular computer and browser, not a mobile device.

Select a thread to process

  1. NOTE: Use a browser other than Firefox (otherwise, you'll be downloading .webp files, which FPN will not accept)
  2. Search for posts by Sandy1 which contain photobucket.com
  3. Select a post (if at all possible, commit to doing the entire thread, but if needed, communicate what you have and have not done)
  4. Before starting, return to this "request for help" thread and post a comment "claiming" the post you're going to process - and to make sure no one else has already claimed that post (paste in a link to the post you're processing)
  5. Process one comment (not topic or thread, but individual comment within the thread) at a time (below will clarify why)

Process each photobucket.com image

  1. Process the images in the order in which they appear
  2. If it will help you, number them as you download them (or add a number to the start of the existing file name, to keep them in sequence)
  3. Select the URL (your browser may allow you to right click on the selected text and choose to open the link in a new tab, in which case, go to step 7)
  4. copy it
  5. open a new browser tab
  6. paste the URL in the address field and hit enter (go or whatever, to load the image)
  7. right click (or tap and hold) on the image and choose to download it

Get a link to the comment for the images you downloaded

  1. Click on the "..." button toward the top right corner of the comment
  2. From the pop-up choose "Share"
  3. Copy the "Link to comment"
  4. Click X to close the dialog

Upload the image to FPN

  1. Go to the gallery set aside for Sandy1 images (currently this one)
  2. Click the Add Images button (DO NOT submit yet)
  3. Select the first image
  4. On the right side of the dialog, in the description field, paste the link to the comment for the image
  5. If the file name is different from that which appears in the comment, make notes so you and others know which image this is
  6. Repeat for all images
  7. Click "Submit all images"
  8. Confirm all images were uploaded - if not, repeat for missing images

Add the images to the original thread

  1. Quote the original comment (the one with the image links)
  2. In the quoted text, put the cursor beneath the original URL (so the image is inserted just under the URL)
  3. Click the "Other Media" button at the lower right corner of the editor
  4. Choose "Insert existing attachment"
  5. In the resulting dialog, at the left, select "Gallery Images"
  6. Select the image to add
  7. Repeat steps 4-7 as needed

Report that you're done

  1. Return to this "request for help" thread and post a comment when you are done with all the comments in the thread you claimed
  2. The moderator will then know it's OK to go back and edit Sandy1's original comment to insert the images you've uploaded and added to the thread

I'll be honest. Personally, I'm more than a little uncomfortable with just making copies of Sandy's files that are hosted on Photobucket in order to reclaim them for FPN and ‘protect’ the content from being lost to the hobbyist community, even though the intent is understandable and respectable.

That said…

If you're going to enlist the help of a group of keen volunteer participants for the exercise to rehabilitate every one of Sandy's reviews, and to the extent of adding a new post at the end of the thread with the embedded images (which is easy for the individual uploader to click-and-select from what he/she ‘owns’ in the FPN Image Gallery), so as to make it easy for you (and/or other moderators) to copy and paste the direct URLs to the copies on FPN's server, then why not just take it one step further? Get the participant to make a copy of Sandy's initial post, and embed the copied images directly into that reproduced post in the positions where they should appear. Once they've appended that reproduced post, complete with embedded images, to the review thread, a moderator can then just copy the whole thing and replace Sandy's initial post with the ‘corrected’ content; and the reproduced post at the end of the thread can be deleted.

Much cleaner that way, and easier and quicker for the moderators to do. It's only asking the participants to do that tiny little bit more to complete the task.

The only reason I'm not uncomfortable with it is because they were freely available on FPN prior to the change-over, during which time, anyone who wanted to could have downloaded them to their hearts content, with or without asking...  But I respect your judgement in this as well, recognizing there's more than one way to look at it.

Good point, and it might not be more work as it gives the person doing the uploading an easy way to identify which image goes where.  Having done two (mostly to figure out how / test the instructions), I think it would actually be easier to quote the original comment, then work from there...

I'm skeptical of getting the volunteers, though - it's quite time-consuming.

@A Smug Dill

As for location, I was trying to put the pictures back in the thread exactly as they appeared, hence why it is important to keep them in order in the upload.  Sandy1 put a lot of effort into these to share with the community and it would be sad for her work to be lost.

Also, I was looking at the file names - directory "Inky Thoughts" and file name FPN****.jpg.
