Request for Help to save older images from early FPN reviews

Well, new problem discovered.  While the file name in the URL from photobucket says ".jpg", it saves as a ".webp".  If I save with .jpg as the extension, my image editor tells me it's not really a jpg.  If I save as a webp, FPN says that file extension is not allowed.  This would mean that the download process gets a lot more complex - essentially, you have to copy the image, paste it into image-editing software, then "save as".

No, you can just use a browser such as Safari that doesn't support the WEBP image format, and Photobucket's server will serve up a JPG version of the image instead to your browser.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

OK, just checked, Chrome will do this. (I'm not about to install Safari, even if there is a version for Windows.) :)  (Hate Chrome, but it is installed for when I want a different browser.)

So, folks would have to know not to use Firefox for this endeavor...

It doesn't appear that cookies (alone) are what determine whether a watermark will be injected into the image by the server.

Oh, @amberleadavis, you need to know that this has the potential to generate some confusion among the masses - not only can everyone add photos to the gallery, but when they go to insert images from their own galleries into posts, images from your gallery will show up in the array of images from which to choose - thus, folks will be wondering where on earth these strange images in their gallery came from (not understanding that the images are not in their gallery, but in a shared gallery).

It may also lead to someone accidentally uploading images into this gallery that have nothing to do with Sandy1 - some folks may not be sufficiently observant, and may just pick any old gallery to which they have access.

(I still think this shared gallery is the best way, but you should be aware of potential issues...)

Edit: I know all that because it already happened once with another user, who later set her gallery to private, with our help. :)

Well, here are our options, I ask for help and we deal the mistakes, or it just doesn't get done. The moderators are all volunteers and I know that I don't have time to do all of these.

The one thing I think I can do is ask for help to get this organized, as in a list of pages and better instructions.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Yep, seems about right to me.  FYI, using your shared gallery, I have downloaded and re-uploaded and re-attached all of the images from this review, so it's done:

Well, that was interesting, I don't see the images in the gallery when I go to reattach within the thread.  I updated the first page so that it is visible.  I'll work on seeing if I can imbed next.  Thank you @LizEF for all the work!

I don't see them when I go to [Other Media]→Insert existing attachment→Gallery Images either, although I can find the URL (https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/fpngallery/monthly_2022_02/large.f4bcac90.jpg.d702b050bdf3c816504cfbb908c9d63c.jpg) and embed the image in a post using that:

You're welcome, and that's strange.  Do you see them in the gallery you linked here in this thread?  If not, "how bizarre".  If so, then back in Sandy's thread, make sure you're going to:

"Other Media" > "Insert existing attachment" > "Gallery Images"

...it defaults to "Post Attachments", which may be why you aren't seeing them - you have to explicitly select the "Gallery Images" option to see things uploaded into a gallery.

How bizarre!  So it would seem that the person who uploads the images is the only person who can see the images.  That's just weird.  You'd think the gallery owner would be able to see and use images in their own gallery, regardless of who owns them.  This is me going to see if I can edit rights on said images somehow. (Though if I can, I won't, because we know that editing image properties breaks links in threads.)

You see it (and we don't) probably because you're the one who uploaded the image into the Image Gallery, and so you ‘own’ it.

Nope, there are no rights-related settings on the image itself.

Not what I meant. “Insert existing attachment” most likely would do a file database search filtered by owner, to only show the images that one owns, for click-and-select insertion into posts. As you can see above, I was able to embed the image you uploaded just fine, so it is not a question of access rights/privilege.

(this was answering a previous comment - we're "leap frogging" comments and answers. :) )

Well, I don't know what to say about that.  Either we handle it the way the MB Midnight Blue thread was handled, or the moderators have to do everything, or volunteers have to be given more rights, or something more complicated...

I was answering my own question as to whether I could grant "everyone" the ability to see my addition to amberlea's gallery - and the answer is, no, I cannot do anything in the properties of the image I upload to grant rights of any sort (or to take them away, etc. - there are no such options exposed to me).

If you can, and that's how you want to handle it, then the logical thing would be for the volunteers to download, upload into the gallery with a link to the comment where the image belongs, and then you get the image URL and embed it into the original comment.  (Assuming you can see it in the gallery itself, separate from editing comments.)  That would make it easier on the volunteers, not having to make a new post.

and:

(Column D) [new URL for direct access to the copy in the FPN Image Gallery]

so that moderators can then edit a post to replace what is in Column C with what is in Column D.

But it's going to be awfully labour-intensive without being able to automate the creation of that table with scripts.

Agreed.  (Personally, I don't know how other people manage to live happy lives without programmable keyboards, regular expression, and the ability to script repetitive tasks...)

@A Smug Dill the one problem I'm having is that when I go to upload the gallery doesn't show the images Liz uploaded. Now the images are clearly there.   I don't know how to either navigate to the correct gallery or get the correct URL. I know you know how to do this.  :)
