Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone

This is review #163 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was very quick and easy. The ink is harder to see in the video / images than in real life. This is a rather pale grey, nearing the limits of paleness for this nib size. Alone, it looks cool, but compared to most of my other greys, it looks rather warm. That might make it neutral... The color "temperature" of the images seems fairly close. The copy paper side of the absorbent paper image has the text a little too dark. The zoom is pretty accurate. The scan is strange - the darker top portion is a little too dark and the paler light portion is a little too light, but it does correctly reveal that the color faded a little as I wrote - seems the ink isn't as wet as I initially thought. The screen capture is pretty accurate as to what my eyes see.

Errata: "Afte" should be "After" :)

See video for important safety information! ;)

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Ouch! What we don't do our eyes for the pleasure of reading Makhabesh's diaries.... ....

Great job, for an ink that doesn't deserve a proper review

Ahh, c'mon, yazeh... you know the old saying... "No ink is completely worthless, you can always use it as a bad example!"

Thank you @LizEF - I know now never to put this one in a fine dry nib!

I really like Moonstone, and use it a lot. It is a bit dry, but in the right pen, with a broad or flex nib and on the right paper, it's a gorgeously complex ink, with all sort of interesting things going on behind the scenes. It's actually one of the very few Edelstein inks I enjoy, and it's fantastic for ink washes. Very satisfying in big splodges too!

:) You're welcome.  Happy to rule this combo out for you!

Thanks for sharing experience of where this ink works.  My images make it seem harder to read than it is, but still, it's one of those inks for fat, wet nibs and paint brushes.  Blotches sound good, too.

Hi @LizEF, thank you for the ink review.

Owning 13 P.Edelstein inks, but not this one for a reason: I don't like to wear safety googles ... 😉

While I agree with @lapis, I'm also done with bad examples.

I saw the video first and will read the story at your homepage. Did those googles had a night vision function built in so that you could see the letters?

PS: I recommend safety googles also for lunch and dinner - so many accidents with cutlery could be avoided! 🤓

One life!

 I wish.  But yesterday, when I inked up after recording another review, I confirmed that the ink isn't as bad (in my ink log) as the camera makes it look.  For whatever reason, the camera seems to filter out some things, and in this ink, that equated to making it look slightly paler than it is.

Agreed!  In fact, if one wants to have fun in a restaurant, one should make a show of donning safety goggles just as the food arrives. :D

I do like the colour of the ink, but it's still interviewing pens.

 It's looking for the one with a nice wet nib, so it can show off what little dye it was born with...

Aww, poor Moonstone! This ink belongs to those inks that should be marketed differently. Going into it with the prospect of getting a serious and usable ink in a medium wet pen, one has to be disappointed for sure. But yeah, stating on the bottle that the ink inside is a demanding diva, yet beautiful and entertaining when served well, would probably not result in high sales outside of our circle of enthusiasts.

The samples I got did well in wet nibs and produced some beautiful shading, and had I not about 10 litres of ink, I'd certainly buy it.

:)  It is definitely taking a beating.  Perhaps it and Colorverse Anti-Matter could get together to complain about the existence of EF nibs...

Ooof...I know from my experience with "Colorverse - Chesapeake Bay" that this won't work for me.

:) Yeah, it and Anti-Matter might be good for mixing into your Diamine whatever it was, but probably not gonna work otherwise.

Here is Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone in the namesake pen with a broad nib.

There we go!  That's the love this poor ink needs. :)  Thanks for the addition!

Aw, @LizEF, you always know how to make people feel good or laugh. That’s a talent.  I do like the ink, and am partial to grays.

:) Thank you!

Great review of an ink that’s not meant to be used in fine nibs. I personally like Moonstone for its pencil-like colour - but this is an ink to use in wet pens with broader nibs. With the increased saturation it looks much better, and exhibits quite some lovely shading. With fine nibs, there’s too much eye-squinting needed to make out what’s written on the paper…
