Fountain pens with large sections (12mm+)?

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for some new pens. I find fountain pens with girthy sections to be the most comfortable. I'm looking for options with 12mm+ sections as the only criteria (vintage, modern, any filling system, anything!). Obviously some sections taper so approximately 12mm at the smallest point is preferable (the bigger the better!). If you also happen to have the section dimensions (min -max, or average in the center, etc. - whatever you can muster) that you can post with your recommendations I will love you forever :). Some fairly easy ones are:

Bexley Promethius

Montblanc 149

Namiki Emperor

Sailor King of Pen

Wahl Eversharp Decoband Oversize (Modern)

Thank you!!

For something more economical take a look at the Ranga ebonite oversize pens at Peyton Street Pens. The Splendour has a 0.53 inch section (13.4mm).

I would suggest you check some of the Gama pens sold by Asa Pens, although at the moment the site is sadly out of stock of almost anything... (covid troubles?)

The Gama Eyas is approx M800 size but the Gama Hawk is same design as the Eyas only larger. The Gama Masterpiece, to my knowledge is even larger. These are rounded end pens, while, similarly the Raja, Kuyil and Supreme are respectively growing sizes of flat top versions.

They are all eyedropper pens and you can order them with Indian nibs or German nibs.

Check Hari's nice review of the Kuyil here

Lamy Dialog 3 - 13,9 mm

Pelikan Twist - 12,45 mm (but triangular)

herlitz my.pen style - 12,0 mm (also triangular)

Pelikan M1000 - only 11,9 mm:sad:

Jinhao 159 - only 11,85 mm:sad:

You will be forgiven that you cannot, but never more that you do not want to.

Delta Dolce Vita Oversized. I know this is no longer in production but it was one of the thickest pen I have.
The other one is the Michael's Fat Boy Silencer fountain pen.

Mid-sized is also chunky; 13mm at narrowest to 14mm at threads.

Add lightness and simplicate.

There are many pens these days with "fat" sections.  However, unless you get used to them, they can initially be unwieldy to write with.  (Think of writing with a highlighter).  Doubly so, if they are heavy as well as fat.  Luckily, the Montblanc 149 / Sailor KOP and the Indian Ebonite pens mentioned above are light in weight.

Check out Indian ebonite pens from Guider, Lotus, ASA, Ranga, Gama. All of them have such pens with thick sections.

Great recommendations! Thank you. These were not really on my radar because I wasn't sure of quality but the Ranga Splendour seem to be available from Peyton Street Pens and its size looks great! Fun colors too. Are all the Indian brands of similar quality?

Where are you all buying your Indian pens from? It was mentioned that some don't seem to be available? I don't even see Lotus anywhere but there direct website (really interesting designs too!). Thank you!

Thanks for the rec. I didn't even think about triangular pens! I also forgot about the M1000 - I remember picking it up and wishing it could be thicker but the looks of the pen might make it close enough!  For the price the Jinhao 159 could be an exception too! Thanks so much.

Wow that is big! I wish these were still being made. Great looking pens. Perfect size!

Awesome! I didn't realize the "smaller" size wasn't really that small. Thanks for the specs. :)

For Indian ebonite pens, it is easiest to directly contact the pen-maker. You can call their phone number or whatsapp. Contact details are in the section on Indian pens (message me if you need any contact details).

Most pens are available, or are made on demand.

Ranga pens are quite good - other brands including ASA, GAMA, Guider are also of equally good quality. Lotus pens (made of niko ebonite) are exceptionally good.

just for the record, as the pen is no longer made since since quite a while and not easy to find, the Delta 365 was also quite a big pen.

here next to a Dolcevita Medium

What's that spell?

This is very clever! I got to give you points for that. I have never seen the dimension for the section but it does look like girthy pen! Thanks!
