Copying Ink??

Slightly off topic, this is from an item currently on an auction site. What would be "copying" ink??

1514428663_InkWell.png.7b600c3c6894dbfd05c9fbc26f2722a4.png

According to St. Google

What is copying ink?

Definition of copying ink

: ink suitable for writing or typing that is to be copied by direct transfer (as in a copying press)

Copying ink Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster

https://www.merriam-webster.com › dictionary › copying ...

----

So it likely meant a slow-drying, transferable ink. Such ink would be most dangerous to write with as one would end up smearing everything, but might be useful for drawings and schemas.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

They did have little letter presses as Typewriters were first coming in.

Seems I lucked out on my guess.

my wife and I were watching Reacher on Amazon Prime last night (2/7/2022) there was a scene of a guy at a desk with an inkwell front and center... but it really wasnt an ink well as much as it was an ink tray... with three bottles of GvFC ink but the labels weren't showing.... it looked cool but can't imagine why i would need three ink bottles unless I only had three (gasp!). Also, there wasnt a fountain pen in sight but there was a cup of sharpened pencils.   Oh set designer.... making it look good but not making it make sense.  :)

I will be asking the 4 year old kid from upstairs if he has similar gadgets of Amber's when he comes visiting today.

I too have ink samples.....and Murphy Never Sleeps.

Dill had a pretty pen...and a clever mind....as did the ink block.

I only have one Ink well, that needed a cap...but with a cork and a dremil I fixed it.

A '30s writing set, my very first inkwell and set.

The topless inkwell is I think for dip pens.

Can I show mine too? 🙂

The Lego kit was a Christmas gift, but I will admit I had to get a child to build it for me. And they made it with a little treasure box on the back.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just five minutes ago, won at a 'live' auction...telephone bidder me...you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Helps if the dog is lazy.jzcC9Jp.jpg

It is younger than it looks, in German's didn't go over to 835 silver until the mid 1930's....unless made for export. The Scandinavians , and who knows whom else didn't go for German coin silver 800.

US was 900 coin silver.

The nib ain't all that great but that's OK, I got more than enough middle to real full flex nibs....not a lot, but Hunt 99-100-101 are quite flexible.

Will have to go get the name erased on the silver seal stamp..@ Petschaft stamp in German. I've been here too long. I could not come up with the name in English, with out getting a translation from German.

Not quite a perfect match, but close enough for Government Work, horseshoes or hand grenades.

KUzqVNs.jpgmOPnx9q.jpg

This is a perfectly matched full set.

I have less seal stamps than I thought.

So will only have to come up with three stamp designs.

(Am quite willing to look at any engraved stamp designs you have, original of luckily found.)

This is the only thing I can think of to put it on. Hard Rubber....much pretty was done with hard rubber back in the day.

Age I don't know.

My other hard rubber inkwell set.1i9iqVv.jpg

...............................

Grumble cubed there is a two book set for collecting inkwells....$$$$ just found while trying to find the hard rubber age.& no luck............

Do Not go Looking For Antique Inkwells.........:crybaby:

Do keep in mind many of the real fancy ornate brass/bronze inkwell sets were made yesterday in India or Morocco. My wife has a good eye for metals and age, in she was a mechanical draftsman, who spent three years working in the shop as part of her three year apprenticeship.

She's kept me away form buying expensive ... cheap modern made fancy looking inkwells. If you want such...fine, but  don't buy at rip off prices.

In most cases an ink well has to have a glass or porcelain insert....even if glass, when a larger glass ink well.

The small inkwell in this silver inkwell set is just small enough not to need an insert.

It is much easier to clean an inkwell with an insert.

My beloved father has bought me several beautiful inkwells over the years. The latest is really stunning.  In the past when I have put ink in the wells, it has dehydrated.  Any thoughts?

And while you are at it, show us your ink wells - in use or in cabinet, we'd love to see it.
