Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Private Reserve Infinity Red

This is review #157 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was surprisingly quick and easy. The color is a little deeper on absorbent and copy paper than the image shows. I think the scan is a little too blue and the actual color might be a little more to the orange side. The screen capture is a little too dark. The zoom isn't too far off. (On my phone, as opposed to this laptop, all the images except the zoom look way to neon-y.)

Pen Chalet did a good review of the "extended cap off" feature.  You can find it here. The difference in their experience versus mine reflects the fact that cap-off time will vary based on ambient conditions.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Thank you, @LizEF for introducing us to this nice red ink.

To my surprise, Private Reserve inks are available in Europe ... I will have to hide my credit card ... 😄

Did I understand right, the goats behave greedy about which one can have a private wizard?

Do the goats have private wizard reserves?

😇

:D Trespassers and found objects beware!  It does seem that our little goat thinks Quin is his.  More to come in this line...

  Given that some of the goats are wizards themselves, they may well have the means to capture other wizards....

Great job Liz

Thanks for introducing me to a new line of Private Reserve. Though, to be honest it reminds me of Monteverde's gimmicks, which isn't surprising.

Ilike the colour on copy paper but I'm not so enticed by either colour in zoom and scan...

The goatsie story reminded me of a often forgotten verse of a famous nursery rhyme ;)

...With a bleat bleat here.
And a bleat bleat there....

 :D

You're welcome!  I do think the inks are useful to anyone averse to capping or buying a VP.  I don't think it's a gimmick per se, but it is clearly designed to grab a piece of the market first.

Yeah, it's not really an exciting red.  Kinda basic.  I expect all the colors to be that way, given their simple names.  We'll see.

:lticaptd:Yes, bleating everywhere in goat-ville.

Long dry time, eh?  I think red inks can be hard to scan or photograph.  Most of the comparison inks looked orange-y to me.

Thanks again for another fun review and story!  I sorta miss the tippity-tap, and bleating goats, er, cars.  😊

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Well, given the "extended cap off" intent, it's not surprising...

Yeah, but I think the comparison is accurate - that is, this red is more toward the pink end of red than the orange end of red.

You're very welcome.  If you're not hearing sound, something's wrong - the sound is there and processed the same way as always.  But yeah, the goat-driven cars are mostly missing since I switched to recording first thing in the morning.

I am not really interested in this ink, but i just stopped by to thank you, LizEF, for your so many reviews with EF nibs. You have been an invaluable resource for me. I have read and watched many of your Youtube reviews, because i have soon realized that inks in broad nibs, aren't the same color you see in fine nibs.

So, thank you very much, again!

Thanks as always @LizEF

I've seen these referred to here and there and was interested to see a review of one.

You've confirmed that this isn't an ink that really interests me on any level.

I'm safe :)

Liz, I trust your time test much more than I trust the test of a sales-company (which is a component of their marketing campaign). Most of our houses are in low humidity conditions in winter (40% here in Maine today). And 10-12 strokes to get it going after 1.5 hours tells me that the ink had no "anti-dryout" powers at all. Thanks for the review.

  They should have made at least one in a more interesting color, then they'd also attract people who are accustomed to capping their pens...

:) Thank you!  It does have some "extended cap off" powers, though - often, about 10 seconds is all it takes before I've got hard starts.  With this ink, I can go close to (but not quite) 10 minutes without hard starts.  That may not be as much as the Pen Chalet folks indicated (apparently writing only once per hour), or as much as folks want, but it is considerably longer than many inks I've used (can't say I've deliberately tested this, but I have noticed it on occasion).

I don't know if it matters, but the pen I used to test dry-out (so as not to influence the ink performance otherwise) was a Platinum Prefounte with a fine nib.

Thank you very much for your review 🙂🌷

The dry time (on paper, written) doesn't seem that long to me.

And the non-dry time on the nib sounds pretty decent.

Still interested in getting (at least one off these inks) (not right now tho). But probably rather blue and/or turquoise than red 😉

Btw, do you think the Infinity inks can be mixed?

Could you please tell where?

I'll be testing those colors eventually.  I haven't considered mixing them, but as far as the generic rules go, it seems like it would be fairly safe - inks from the same product line.  Since all the colors are rather generic, maybe I'll try it after I've reviewed them - but that could be several months from now.

  • 1 month later...

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 300µm.
