What pen(s) are you using today?

A Smug Dill

Recommended Posts

This morning: (1) an early-1980s MB 146, medium-fine nib, with MB Midnight Blue (non-IG); and now, for the library, (2) the new (old) Lamy 26p with an EF steel nib and a mystery cartridge of blue-black, possibly Monteverde.

(1) When I started out in this hobby I thought of myself as being uninterested in what I thought of as "standard" Montblancs like the 146 and, god forbid, the enormous 149, and collected a handful of less familiar (and smaller) vintage MBs -- nothing rare; things from the 50s and 60s like a nice, usable 3-42G; a 252; a 12. I did buy a 146 with a monotone nib, probably from the first half of the 1980s, as a gift for my spouse, who had a specific interest in that pen (and whom I first met in 1983). Eventually I decided to get a "matching" 146 from the same era for myself. I've been using it a fair bit lately. What did I ever have against this pen? It's lovely! (And now I also have a 149 from an overlapping era, which isn't so big after all.)

(2) The Lamy required some flushing and flossing, and then there was the fact that none of my international standard converters would fit in it. But an international standard cartridge, with sloped shoulders, works fine. I always want a pen like this with me, at home or out in the world, because the EF nib puts down so little ink that it writes very finely and dries almost immediately: perfect for scribbling down call numbers in a library notebook or making entries in my new-for-2026 paper appointment calendar (continuing my slow retreat from digital mediation, FPN obviously excepted).

I like using Turquoise ink on Thursdays, I visualize days as colors for some reason. Monday is red, Tuesday is orange, Wednesday is green, Friday is blue, Saturday is purple, Sunday is grey or black. So my Thursday pens are a generic Chinese piston that I made a fine italic inked with Wearingeul Robinson Crusoe (thank you, @Lithium466!) with some gold mica added, and the very fine nibbed Ciselé Elite with Colorverse Dokdo. Both of these are very close to running out of ink, so I may end up with another pen by end of day.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 25 currently inked pens:

Parker Duofold Centennial IM, RO Rose Gold Antiqua

MontBlanc Bohème Noir F, MB Midnight Blue

Pelikan M800 needlepoint, Kuretake Shikon

MontBlanc Noblesse M, KWZ Sheen Machine 2

Waterman 52 EF, Herbin Bleu Pervenche

Parker premier with an 18k broad nib and onoto magna with a broad steel nib. Both filled with my favourite ink, Diamine sapphire blue.

Today's note pen is a Parker 45 with a steel stub nib.

Having not yet re-inked the Ebony Magna, I'm using the only pen I that is inked, a CS Duro.

So far today it's been the Sheaffer Star Wars Pop R2-D2 pen, M nib, still with vintage Skrip Permanent Red; and the Pelikan M120 Iconic Blue, M nib, still with Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black.

Using a brand new Sailor Imperial Black fine.    My first Sailor F - loving the nib.   Previously tried an M and didn’t love it.    Wish I hadn’t also bought a NOS pocket pen from a Japan seller on eBay, but that’s what happens when I have too much time on my hands.

Sounds like a form of grapheme-color synesthesia. Which would mean you have a better memory than the rest of us.

Pelikan M600, red tortoise, 14c F "imperial" grind, Taccia Ukiyo-e Benitsuchi. This combination of ink and nib feels a little on the dry side, but not enough to be unpleasant to use, and I'm digging the "red soil" color.

Today's pen is a Narwhal Nautilus, ebonite with a super smooth steel fine point.  Nakahama Whaleman's Sepia.

Ebonite has such a great feel to it, difficult to explain.  Nahvalur is a 'new to me' brand, but I really loved how this pen evoked Captain Nemo and the Art Deco-Punk aesthetic.  It's a piston-fill, holds a gallon of ink and was a terrific writer, right out of the box.  It's a big pen, right at 150mm long and fortunately doesn't post or I'd need a shoulder rest to use it comfortably.

I definitely see the nautical design inspiration, but I also see the stairwells in Rockefeller Center...

Oh I get you completely about ebonite.  It has a warmth to it in feel, which other materials don't have.

Wow!  That's an attractive looking pen!  I wonder, though, how heavy it would be....

It's a Grifos Gaudi tribute Fibonacci Sequence pattern Guilloche Sterling Silver F #6 Bock steel nib. Actually not nearly as heavy as it looks. Nothing like a Yard-o-Led Sterling.

Fibonacci Sequence?  Cool!   Although the scary part is that I kinda know what that is, from some math class I had in high school....

That is definitely a possibility. I see music in color, and sometimes certain colors can really affect my mood. I have a really good memory for certain things, and terrible for others. I’m a good test taker and love learning.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
