Hello world!

It's wonderful to see a website dedicated for people like us! I'm Nodari, beginner fountain pen user and I'm happy to be here.

My handwriting has always been ugly. Being a technical person, I didn't care about looks or anything, I never needed to show my writing to anyone.
However, later on I started appreciating those beautiful hand writings and calligraphy more and more, till recently I decided I want to do something about mine and improve it.

I do want to write letters and not be ashamed on how they look! Handwritten letters really are amazing.

That's when I also discovered more about fountain pens (before, I just thought they were some old school pens nobody used anymore.. How wrong I was!).

After checking out some pens online, they were a bit more towards expensive side for me, and then I found a local deal. Old soviet pen was for sale which was much better deal than anything online and I took it.

I'm now proud owner of Soyuz АР 111. It's from 1975, lot older than me, it's brand new, never used (well now I have used it), with original box and even receipt! It has piston filling mechanism and gold semi hooded nib.
Paired it with Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo (I'm from a country where fountain pens aren't really used at all, so there are no stores that even have ink for sale. I was able to find only this ink and just 15ml and I was lucky). And I had a blast writing for the whole day.

Pens are addicting, I'm already looking for another pen to own in the near future :D

Which inks would you recommend(mainly looking for a good value, best bang for the buck)? What do you think is the most underrated colour?

Welcome to FPN! :)  That's a wonderful story of your first pen and ink.

As to your question about inks, the answer depends on your location - looks like Georgia (the country, not the US state)?  If you can order online, Diamine might be a good deal, or Rohrer & Klingner, or perhaps Pelikan's 4001 line, or maybe even Pennonia?  (I'm guessing European/UK inks will be easier for you to get.)

PS: Please have some lavash on my behalf.  I haven't had any since the 1990s, and miss it!  :puddle:

Ordering online is pretty much the only option for me, tho I don't mind it.

Just ordered Pelikan's 4001 royal blue. I'll be sure to checkout other recommendations as well!

Thanks!

PS: That's a long time without a lavash! I'll be sure to have some on your behalf :D

Nice photographs of your Suyuz AP111.  It looks like in mint condition too. Hard to imagine it is 50 year old fountain pen. You got lucky there.

Welcome to the forum. That Soyuz looks great. I noticed the Yamaha logo on your avatar, are you a musician or a motorhead?

Oh haha! Motorhead! I have been using that avatar since forever, put it here just out of habit.

I did get lucky for sure! I don't even probably need an upgrade for quite a while. It does write very well and it is gonna take me really long to be skillful to the point that I may need something better. Except flex nibs... Those really are attractive! :D

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
