Need help. Which would you recommend. A Sailor 1911 or Sapparo?

Trying to make up my mind.

Thanks for the help.

I think the 1911 is comparable to the Professional Gear while the Sapparo is comparable to the M1911. So the spawned question is are you asking about style or size? It almost always becomes a personal issue for users (as apposed to accumulators), which one would you be more comfortable living with.

YMMV

I have a couple of Sailor 1911s and a Pro Gear. I think both are fabulous writers out of the box with incredibly smooth nibs. I agree that your choice comes down to which size and style you prefer. The Sapporo is shorter than the 1911. As for style, I like the flat top/bottom styling of the Pro Gear and the Sapporo line. But the torpedo design of the 1911 is a classic and is very sleek. And for whatever it's worth, the 1911 comes with a 21k nib and the Sapporo line comes fitted with a 14k nib.

One story I read here: a non-FP-user saw someone's 1911 and said, "What's that, another Montblanc knock off." Not that this SHOULD matter to your decision, but it MIGHT.

I have the Sapporo. I was surprised at how small it was, but it works. I do have to write with the cap posted though. If this is a problem for you, you might want to stick with the larger 1911.

I have a few smallish pens so I think that puts the Sapparo out of the picture. The comment about the Montblanc knock off troubles me because I have heard it before.

Any other suggestions for Japanese pens

Thanks

The 1911 Demo will definitely not be confused for an MB!

If I were to get a Sailor, it would be a pro gear in rhodium trim with a broad nib.

I have exactly that pen and it's a great writer.

How about the full-size Professional Gear? Sapporo are called Professional Gear Slim in Japan and a tad smaller. Here's a comparison photo. From the left, 1911 (Profit Standard), Professional Gear, Professional Gear Mini, Professional Gear Slim (Sapporo), Professional Gear Slim Mini (Sapporo Mini)

My husband "gave" me his Sapporo which fits my hand just fine. For his bigger hand he prefers a larger pen such as the 1911. The Sapporo writes extremely smooth and I have a fine nib.

So if you're looking for a larger pen, go with the 1911 otherwise the Sapporo is a good choice also.

You are welcome, Margana. I think Laura posted it before, and I looked for it and found it at Sailor's website.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
