Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Pelikan 4001 Violet

This is review #126 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was really quick and easy.  After the Amazing Amethyst Adventure in Color, I decided not to touch the red-blue balance of these images, but here are my observations on color: The ink color in the scan is a little too light - this seems normal for scans.  The zoom and absorbent paper images are also too blue.  The screencapture seems to have the best color-matching.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Thank you for the review.  This color does not grab my interest any longer, though it sure did in the beginning.

At last, the old goat!  😜

I have this ink in carts.  Color's very pretty!  Thanks again for another fun review....might be interesting to see if my carts attract vehicular motion.....

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

You're very welcome!  And yeah, it could be a whole new science - "The correlation between ink and vehicular noises".

I used Pelikan 4001 Violet exclusively for twenty years before realizing that one could obtain purple inks that were darker and less vivid.

I am glad that you mention the above-average lubrication.  Although it is slightly on the dry side, Violet doesn't have a dry feel as one writes with it.  I have a Pelikan 140 EF that writes dry, with significant feedback, and the first purple I tried in it was Waterman, on the theory that a wetter ink would be a better choice for the pen, but Pelikan 4001 Violet, albeit drier, provided a much more pleasant writing experience, on account of its lubrication.

Thanks for adding your experiences. :)  The lubrication is more important the finer your nib gets, so it seems like a crucial factor in EF nib ink reviews.  Now I'm interested what I'll find when I get to Waterman Tender Purple. :D

Thank you as always @LizEF - great review.

I've always assumed this would be another dry ink, as so many of the 4001's are, so I've never bothered with it. Sounds like I may have been wrong. I'm not sure I need another 'standard' purple, but I might consider it when my current Tender Purple runs out. I'll be interested to know how you find the two compare as that's an ink I tend to use in finer nibs.

I made the opposite choice, because I prefer the color of Tender Purple.  In the range of what I call "bright medium purples suitable for spring", my favorite is actually Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki Shikibu, but I have hesitated to use that ink in my vintage pens.

Me too!  If anything, these reviews have taught me that while some brands may have some tendencies, every ink is different, and generalizations about brands or even lines could well lead to disappointments and misconceptions, so I've been pointing that out (usually over on reddit) when folks as questions like "which brands make wet ink".

Then hopefully I'll have reviewed Tender Purple by then. :D

Unlike some people, I'm very fond of this ink.  Thanks for the review.

:) You're very welcome!  I agree, it's a lovely ink, and I was happily surprised by its performance.

In terms of darker and less vibrant, Cross Violet fits that bill nicely for me.

re the 4001, this is certainly a color I can get behind, a 'happy' purple. I use Stipula Purple, which is similar if perhaps a bit redder.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I prefer shades a good bit darker and less vivid than Cross Violet.  I like the darkest of blacks and those that are grayish.

Thanks for the review. Seems like a good-behaving purple. Personally, I associate violet with a more bluish purple (like the one in the zoomed-in pics. I like that type of colour more. I noticed at the bottom of the screenshot that the colour looks lighter - maybe due to faster writing ?  That colour actually looks really nice, nicer than the darker purple at the top (personal opinion).

I've long since given up on trying to make sense of color names. :)

Yes, in this case, faster writing.  In some cases (and possibly this), it could be flow as well, the feed starting to run drier.

Well, one really can't trust online photos... The combined sum of them give you a guess, but in the end, you have to take a chance. :)

Who is your protagonist in this part? Makhabesh/Quin or the goat? Is it a bromance or Goat-mance? ;):D

:D Quin & Makhabesh remain our main characters.  Can't imagine that changing.

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
