Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Noodler's Shah's Rose

This is review #125 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was easy but did take a little longer than usual.  Only water was needed.  The zoom image and scan have the text too pale - it's a darker pink, very magenta (in fact, it looks to me almost identical to the PANTONE Process Magenta seen on the cards in the video).  For possibly the first time, the screencapture has the best color reproduction! :)

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Thank you @LizEF as always :)

This one's not for me on many levels, but I'm sure there will be people who'll love it!

You're very welcome! :)

Pink seems to be a divisive color - folks love or hate it, not much in between.  Which is probably why some companies will paint their tools (think wrenches and bolt cutters and power tools) pink - keeps them from being stolen, seriously.

This is one of the first (if not THE first) pink ink I ever bought.  I really should pull it out again.

Thanks as usual for the review.

Funnily enough, the pinkness is about the only thing I quite like about it!

:D Oh, I see, you wanted something that doesn't dry quite so quickly! ;) :P

Mine was gifted to me eons ago by a generous FPNer, and was actually the first pink FP ink I've ever had, too. :)

You're welcome!

Thanks for the review. Nice pink but not needed.  Also not needed is 90ml of it filled to the brim. I might use 10ml and even that's a push.  Noodler's Inks have never appealed to me in this regard.

Yeah, in the beginning, volume and price/mL appealed to me, but now I know just how long ink lasts, and except for my most favorite inks, 10mL sounds about right.

Thanks @LizEF for this fab review .... I've been voting for this for quite a bit...

Not my cup of tea, I have his/her sibling, the Ottoman, which I prefer.

It's funny, I would have gone for a richer colour for the King's (Shah's) rose....

Ah, so @mizgeorge can blame you! ;) :P

Well, be sure to read the post-recording notes.  The swatch in the video, or the screen capture from the video is the best color reproduction.  It's really darker and "hotter" than the zoom shows, and I think we could call that "richer".  For whatever reason, the zoom didn't want to pick that up, and the scan almost always over-exposes.

From your review, it seems that Ottoman is duskier and darker (at least from your nibs ;) ) and Shah's is brighter and lighter (though I wouldn't use "light" to describe it, personally).

'Eternal dry time' = Run, Sailor, run!  😜

VERY pretty color, though.  Thanks for the review, and please keep those quotes coming.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:D I knew that would be your favorite part!  Only, I think it's "Smear, Noodler's, smear!"

You're very welcome.  Still got plenty of quotes, so no worries for a while. :)

Another fine review! I am not a big fan of pink-ish inks… there are really only two that I find appealing: Pelikan Edelstein Turmaline and Callifolio Andrinople. The zoomed-in scan seems to go in that direction, but the screen-shot shows something more purple-pink than rose-pink.

The screen-shot is truer.  It doesn't quite reach the point where you'd call it purple - especially stand-alone - but it's also not like any pink rose I ever saw. :)

  • 6 months later...

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 295µm.

Hooray!!!  Last one!  All done with the past reviews.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
