Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Rohrer & Klingner Magenta

This is review #121 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Yama-budo is as close as I have to compare. The other comparisons were included to show that it's not pink or purple, but something in between.  The scan is pretty close, but a little too blue, I think.  The zoom looks pretty accurate.  The screenshot is too dark and too purple (too much blue).  Cleaning was quick and easy!

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Thanks for the review!

I don't remember R&K Magenta being that quick-drying on Rhodia DotPad paper; I should double-check some time.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I once had a couple of 'magenta' sample vials, but I don't recall whether they were this brand or De Atramentis.

Yes, it does look similar to YB.  I may not use EF nibs very often but I always like to see what inks perform well in 'em.  Helicopters or no.

Thanks once again!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Thank you as ever @LizEF - once again a perfect and very useful review :)

I'm really impressed with the dry time on this one - but the colour is probably not for me. I can cope with the odd splash of fuchsia (ideally paired with turquoise), but full on magenta is just heading too close to the dangerous burgundy/maroon territory!

I can see the appeal though, especially in a EF nib where colours aren't always as visible as they might be in a broader nib.

You're most welcome!  As to dry time, the nib used will help explain - super-fine and not wet (not the driest nib, but certainly not wet).

:D For some, the helicopter-affinity might be a plus...

You're very welcome! :)

Oh, that would be quite the combo - might put some into brightness-overload! :D

Not as in-your-face, but it definitely stands out, hence my recommendation for mark-up - something different from the usual (and currently hated) "red ink"! ;)

Thanks for the comparison!  Yama-budo isn't a near-twin, it was just the closest color I had...

:) Thanks!  I appear to be on a mission, saving Japanese EF nib users everywhere...  (And learning enough to dispel some myths about such fine nibs.)

This isn't an ink for me, I confess, but big thanks for the great review.

I'm just as happy to save your time as to induce you to empty your wallet. ;)  You're very welcome! :D

11 squared reviews… that also caught my eye. An impressive stash of ink 😉

Thanks for the review, Liz. The colour itself doesn’t really appeal to me, but it works great in the EF nib. From the blow-up, it also seems a bit similar to Pelikan Edelstein Amethyst, although the Amethyst looks somewhat darker.

:) Fortunately, the vast majority are (were) samples.  And a huge thanks to the community, who gifted me a great many samples.

:) Yes, a bit brighter than your usual choices, and bright usually works well in EF nibs.  It looks like Pelikan Edelstein Amethyst is more purple (as it should be, just from the name).

Great job, as usual Liz!

The colour looks actually nice on screen.... The name uninspired ;)

I was busy trying to figure out what was the magic notebook/ pen/ ink yesterday....and I got side tracked with MM (Makhabesh's Mama) and the ghastly goat :P

 Yes, not a lot of thought went into that one.  Perhaps we can give them the benefit of the doubt and believe they wanted a Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black ink with those names so folks could use them in mixing....

Thank you @LizEF, great review!

R+K Magenta is one of my longer time used inks which comes out quite nicely with my fine and extra fine nibs, but at first I used it for calligraphy where it really shines.

PS: Do you have an address where to buy the quantum-inner-exteneded backbag? I have already asked the Tardis producer, but they have discontinued their precious business and were specialised at wooden boxes only. Unfortunately, I do not know Hermione Granger in person.

PS2: was the helicopter one of those escaped from the quantum bag? 😇

One life!

It's made by a rather scary old wizard and wizardess couple who live in one of the towers of the Wizards' Keep.  Only those brave or desperate enough ever manage to acquire one.  Rumor has it the third second wizard in the keep's history once went to acquire one, and never managed to find his way back out of the tower - which itself may have started life as an abandoned police box....

 I believe it was an ordinary US Army helicopter.  I think they were investigating the sighting of an Unidentified Phlying Animal....

:D You're most welcome.  (And thank you for asking - before you asked, I had no idea where Quin's pack came from. ;) )
