Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diamine Denim

This is review #115 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: The color of this ink is really sort of ordinary, but a dark ordinary...  Scan is a bit too blue - the smudge, for example, looks very blue-black in real life.  But there doesn't seem to be enough color in the strokes for me to do any adjustment.  The zoom looks right when I put my nose against the paper to compare them, but the shading and the lighter color is hard to see when not looking at the paper from up close.  The screenshot isn't bad.  Cleaning was quick and easy and suggested only one dye used - I suspect I prefer inks with multiple dyes...

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great job @LizEF  This is the kind of ink that for sole purpose of writing... None distracting.

Spidery pendant... I wonder where did that come from? ;)

Poor Marsell. One Sphinx is bad enough, a horde of them.... :D

Thanks for the review.  This is one of my favorite inks (I got it several years ago to try and match the color and shading for some sort of vintage ink that flushed out of my first Esterbrook pen, an SJ with a 1555 Gregg Shorthand nib.

Thank you!  Yes, this definitely wouldn't distract you while you write.

Hmm, yes, from a sketch someone did, I think. :D   (Thought you might enjoy that.)

Yes, well, this is what you get when you imprison folk in giant sphinxes and try to form an oily empire...

You're most welcome! :)  Nice story.  But, is there a Pitman Shorthand nib? ;) :D If there is, I seriously want to know the difference!

This is one of my favorite dark blue inks; it's always in some pen or other, usually a Preppy.  I should branch out with it.  😉

Thanks for the review, as always.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Not as far as Esterbrook goes.  Don't know about other brands.  And having never taken shorthand, I probably couldn't tell you the difference anyway....

I seriously doubt there are multiple "shorthand" nibs.  I was just making fun of them labeling it explicitly for Gregg, as if it would matter.  I'm sure the name was just designed to appeal to American shorthand-takers of the era. :)

I like Diamine inks. They're nice, straightforward, excellent value and have a huge range of colours.

This is not one of my favourites. I just find it a bit boring - and I have a lot of dark blue inks that are better behaved and more interesting. I'll no doubt finish the small bottle I have, but it won't be a repeat purchase.

Thank you @LizEF as always for an excellent review :)

I have to agree.  A rather ordinary dark blue.

Thank you for the review. A nice “business” colour, but a pity that it feathers on cheaper paper (like what’s available at the office). The name is no match for my jeans though… much darker than I associate with denim.

You're very welcome!  Keep in mind the awful feathering you see is puzzle paper - far worse than any copy paper.  The bottom is the copy paper and looks worse than your eyes see it, due to the magnification - it's really not so bad, though there's a lot of different copy papers out there, so who knows...

As for denim, I have to assume they were going for the dark denim that used to be the only color back in the day, before "stonewashed" first appeared (followed by lots of other options).  But you're right, it doesn't even look quite like that.

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 330µm.

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

      >Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color,<   I'm sure they were, and my answer assumes that. It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
