Vinta Inks Makopa 1938/ Malayan Apple

Hello everyone. First ink review here and I can't quite figure out how to insert images or embed an IG post, so I'll keep it short and link my full thoughts on my blog, The Pscrybe Reviews [here]

Shading – 0/5
Sheen – 4/5
Saturation- 5/5
Wetness – 4.5/5

Makopa 1938/ Malayan Apple by Vinta Inks has a beautiful purplish magenta colour. Low/no shading. Gold/green sheen contrasts nicely.
I find it wet and unforgiving to cheap papers but makes for a nice writing experience with the usual fp-friendly papers. It did not dry out after staying in my TWSBI for a week or so but could just be the pen. It's the first ink I own in this colour family and I'm very happy with it. Definitely looking forward to more inks by Vinta.

Thanks for the review and welcome to a fellow resident of Thailand!

I just have two Vinta Inks: a bottle of Mulberry (Ubi 1663), a beautiful dark purple, and Gold Dust (Piloncitos 1521), a stunning greyish green with gold shimmer (though I can do without the shimmer ...). Both are really great. I bought Mulberry because I thought the color looks much like the dark purple yams here in northern Thailand - and it does!

Thanks for this creative review. Enjoyed it.

Looking forward to other ones....

Adding photos is easy, just drag them in....

Crikey that's bright! Not a colour for me - far too magenta, and I'm not a big fan of green sheen. I have one ink in this colour family and that's plenty for me.

I love Vinta's less saturated inks though.

Thank you for a nice review :)

Thank you! If you know where to get Pilot VPs here please let me know... The available range and price mark-up here saddens me but what can you do, huh? Mulberry and Gold Dust look nice! I agree on shimmer being optional, but Gold Dust looks like it shades well... Maybe it's time to order online again...

Hahaha I think I'll figure it out eventually. But if you have advice for embedding IG posts specifically, do hmu!

I agree, it's pretty eye-searing but I sort of like the loudness (can ink shout at your eyes?hmm.) And also agree on the less saturated inks by Vinta. Armada is my current love.

Thanks for the review!  Looks like a nice eye-searing color. :)

As to your questions about images and IG...  If you want to pursue the questions, I recommend posting a new topic in the Members Helping Members forum - be sure to specify whether you're using a mobile phone or a computer, since the instructions could vary significantly.  But, for basics...

You can copy the link of an Instagram post, and paste that link in here (either directly in the text as a URL, or by highlighting text and using the link icon in the editor's toolbar), but there's no way to embed it like you can embed a YouTube video or another FPN post (I just tested it, won't work).  By way of example, here's a link to my most recent IG post (review of KWZ Old Gold).  And IG fights against you trying to get a URL to your images there, so using the IG image URL with the FPN editor window's "Other Media" button would actually be more of a pain that just posting the image on FPN directly.

Which brings us to that.  There are two options:

  1. Attaching the image to the post - this is not the recommended option.  You should see an option at the bottom of the editor window to drag or choose files (on a computer, ask if you need mobile phone instructions).  Just follow the prompts you see at the bottom of the editor window.  (Attachments are better saved for non-images, since it's the only way to add those.)
  2. Using the FPN gallery - this is the recommended option.  Choose "Gallery" from the FPN menu.  Click the Add Images button.  If you don't have a gallery of your own already, it will prompt you through creating one and adding images.  Once done, go to the post where you want to use the images (start a new post, start a new reply, edit a post, whatever) and use the "Other Media" button at the lower right corner.  Choose the "Insert existing attachment" option, then choose "Gallery Images" and select from the images you've uploaded.  It may seem complex, but once you've walked through it once, it's really quite easy.

The gallery version is preferred for images because the system allows more images (than the attachments option), with more handling options, and it keeps the images here on FPN, so that, for example, if you one day delete your IG post / account (or IG makes some major change that alters URLs), the FPN reviews still have their images displayed.  A stroll through the pre-2021 ink reviews will reveal many with broken image links - which is very frustrating for someone researching an ink.

Hope that helps.  There are several discussions in Members Helping Members, and Community Feedback about uploading images and using the gallery, should you need them.

I tend to order from Cult Pens, Pure Pens, or The Writing Desk, all in the UK, because their prices are good and shipping to Thailand is reasonable. For a VP maybe also look at Ebay for Japanese sellers.

I also saw that very recently someone here was selling a beautiful 2nd hand VP - if I remember correctly it has a urushi finish. I was very tempted to buy it myself. I will try to find out if it is still available and send you a private message.

Just sent you a private message. It is indeed urushi, absolutely stunning, NOS, and a great price. M nib - I would have bought it if it were an F ... Not sure but I think it is still available.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
