I've always wondered if these really high sheeners are actually fairly normal dye based inks that manufacturers add less water to when they make them. So adding a bit more water makes them more "normal"

What would they replace it with?  Ink is 98% +/- water.

I was able to tame the drying on the nib almost instantly problem by diluting it 2:1 ink:water. Still looked great and sheened like crazy and much more useable for writing. There's still the problem of little spots of blue appearing on the counter top for days after fillings.

Of course it is. So they start with the complete powdered mixture that they will use to make the ink. Then to that can they add a higher or lower percentage amount of water depending on how saturated they want the ink.

Being the simpleton that I am, I'd adjust the dye load to the constant volume of water.

Personally, I've used and loved OS Nitrogen. On Rhodia paper using an EF nib I have had no issues whatsoever, not even nib drying, not smearing. And it still is mesmerizing looking at those notes. I just checked some old notes and each time I do I want to reload it and make it an EDC ink.

I was inspired to pull out the Sport I had it in to give it a another go myself. The ink had evaporated from the cart (I am sometimes lax with pen hygiene) but I filled it with my 2:1 mix, rinsed the nib under the faucet and it wrote straight away. Not for long, though; the writing I got was just the water on the feed, which soon ran out. No worries, I pulled the cart off and blew water through the section/feed to clear it and it seems to be working fine now. I'll take it to work tomorrow.

I’ve had a bottle of OS nitrogen on my shelf for who knows how long and finally got around to using it. I had no real problems with the ink on paper—lots of sheen but reasonable dry time and no smearing. It did have to get primed if I didn’t use the pen for a couple days, which I could live with. But it’s probably taken longer to clean out of my pen than I spent writing with the ink. Even the cap took forever to clean out. I’m still not sure either is actually clean yet. I leave water in the pen overnight and it keeps coming out blue the next day (and this is after countless flushes with a bulb filler). The ink is neat but not sure it’s worth this much effort.

The cleaning ordeal is why I used it exactly once.  Not worth the effort for me.

I do not clean it, I just refill the pen with the same ink and continue using it. I suppose one day I should have an in-depth cleaning (it is a piston filler) but meanwhile that removes all the hassle.
