Sailor Manyo Ukikusa

Recommended Posts

Ukikusa (meaning duckweed) is a bright yellowish green with a grey tint of low to medium saturation. The colour looks spring-like and is best used in broader nibs to show off the shading. The flow is okay.

All images are scans colour-corrected with grey card, except close-up photos which are also white-balanced with a grey card.

Pretty enough color (and great review, as always) but I just don't understand the fascination (on the manufacturers' part) with these wishy-washy, washed-out inks. Even Stipula Saffron looks like a Sharpie next to most of these.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

There are those who prefer subtle, sudued, gentle colours. 😃

Add lightness and simplicate.

Me!! - I actually think Ukikusa is one of the brighter inks in my current favourites.

This is another fabulous review. I'm in awe of the format, quality and work involved in these - thank you again B)

Thanks again, LG!  I like this color too, though I don't know that it's unique enough to trick me into buying a bottle...

Oh… but I do 😉  Many different tastes in ink-land, as it should be - I’m one of these inhabitants that prefers their inks to be soft, muted, toned-down, greyish, murky, wishy-washy … much prefer them over vibrant inks. And I love it when ink makers brew to my tastes!

@lgsoltek: great review as always. This ink looks really beautiful. I’ve not used Sailor inks yet, but I can see that this needs to change.

As my ink collection grows I find myself more and more open to these less saturated wishy-washy inks. They do have their own charm. Also having a few more broad and wet pens helps too.

This is just the sort of green I like -- not blue leaning, but not too bilious yellow leaning either.  Thanks for the review.  And, well, not....  (I just got 8 ink samples in the mail, plus some I got at The Pen Boutique when I was in the DC area a couple of weeks ago, plus all the ones I haven't tried yet, plus a sample of an ink I'd been wanting to try when someone was giving some samples away at the Steel City Nibs meeting -- first one in over a year that has been in person, not over Zoom).

Note to new people: this is what I mean when I warn them about all the shameless enablers on this site....

I certainly meant no offense to those who like muted colors; I think many of these are certainly pretty enough colors in themselves but was speaking from a legibility standpoint. I myself need inks that stand in reasonable contrast to the paper and many of these just don't stand out too well, especially in finer nibs.

No offense taken. Thank goodness tastes differ.

May I ask, though, with the possible exception of a light word or two is there anything in the review pics that is actually difficult to read? Or even puts any strain or delay on being able to figure out what the words are?

The four lines under Pen 1 look pale and likely hard to see in dim light and that's with the enlarged page size I use, I'd hate to try reading several pages of it  at actual size.

Granted, the close-up photos seem to show a more distinct line than the scans.
