Sailor Ink Studio 280

Sailor Ink Studio 280 is another one of those "multi-hue" inks. The colour ranges from a light green to an ochre, and is very dependant on your nib, wetness, paper and lighting. It's an interesting ink.

The flow is medium and rather bad by Sailor standards (still better than 224 for example), but it's expected from this kind of inks.

All images are scans colour-corrected with grey card, except close-up photos which are also white-balanced with a grey card.

Love everything about this - the review, the ink, the colour, the photography. Just perfect in every way :)

Thank you!

I love everything except that the color is unpredictable.  Apparently I'm not ready for unpredictable inks.  But I love the review. :)

I wonder how common it is for customers in Sailor's domestic market to use inks like this not in fountain pens but in brush pens, where a dry flow would not be problematic.

This thought occurs to me because I have lately begun to use a brush pen for daily kana calligraphy practice, leaving the project of grinding ink to use on a brush for weekends.  Hence, I have, for the past few days, been shopping around for ink to use in my brush pens.  A search with "brush pen" among the terms revealed that descriptions of TAG Kyoto inks often state that they are suitable for use with brushes.  I did not find any such references in descriptions of inks manufactured in Europe or the United States.

On FPN there seem to be almost no references to brush pens, even in the forum called "It writes, but it isn't a fountain pen," and living in San Francisco, I do not often see a brush pen in use, but a few years ago I attended the funeral of a Japanese friend, and the one implement provided for signing the guest book was a brush pen.

I wouldn't be likely to choose a green ink myself, but this series of reviews--thank you, lgsoltek!--inspires the thought that some of the other especially delicate colors in the Ink Studio line would appeal to me for use in certain calligraphy projects.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
