Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

Recommended Posts

Here it is, the first shimmering ink from Pelikan: the 2021 Edelstein Golden Beryl. The base colour is a yellow that leans a bit towards orange. Where the ink pools there could be a hint of green. The particles are, obviously, golden ones. The colour is not illegible, but when I'm writing under the desk lamp I'm basically blinded by the lightness of the colour and the shimmers. The whole ink reminds me of Penbbs #111 Shanghai.

The particles Pelikan uses here seem to be quite large in size - larger than those from J. Herbin. The particles are very easily rubbed off the paper. The flow seems to be better than the usual Pelikan inks, but due to the large size of the particles, there's a tendency of inconsistent flow. Anyway this ink doesn't really excite me. I'd rather have a re-release of the 2013 Amber.

All images are scans colour-corrected with grey card, except close-up photos which are also white-balanced with a grey card.

Thank you for another glorious ink review! I can't wait until I receive the bottle I have on order, although (multiple corroborating reports of) its shimmer particles being easily rubbed off after the ink has dried is concerning.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I truly enjoy your reviews, especially the close ups and your elegant handwriting, thank you 🙏

Wonderful review - thank you so much :)

I've been using this for a week or two now, and have come to rather like the colour, but the shimmer adhesion is definitely less good than either Herbin or even Diamine.

I can't be bothered to filter so it will either be kept for seasonal use (when nobody seems to mind a bit of glitter) or filled from an unblended bottle to minimise any particles.

I've come to quite like the colour, though I too would rather have another Amber!

Great review yet again. (Do as many as you want - I'll be glad to look at your writing, regardless of the ink!)

I have a similar shimmery ink from Ostrich. A fun ink I have only dared to use with dip pens.

Ditto this.  Not so sure about the ink - though the pictures appeal to me much more than the scans, which look sort of muted.  Meanwhile, the PenBBS link looks much more interesting. :)

Fixed that for you. ;)

Thanks for the lovely review. I particularly liked the comparison chart. Here it seems like a twin of Callifolio Heure Dorée. My first impression was that Golden Beryl is a bit more saturated and legible, but I haven’t put them side by side yet.

I just have my Golden Beryl bottle for a week. Only used it with a dip pen, and I’m still deciding what pen to use with it… I’m not very trusting with regard to glitter particles. Well… maybe I’ll risk it with a Pelikan M200 and a broader M or B nib.

Thank you @LizEF (can't make the quotey thing work for some reason).

I still have very mixed feelings about glitter, shimmer and sparkle. At times, I rather like how it looks, and there's a secret little frivolous corner of my soul to which it brings real joy. Which is why I have a little pot of Wing Sung 3008's that I've stubbed the nibs on specifically to use with these silly inks.

The bit I don't like is when it refuses to just stay where it's meant to be, and I am reminded of my daughter's early childhood when friends (all of whose children were much older) would delight in pointing out that I had glitter on my face / clothes / hair, making me feel like the disorganised old hippy that I suspect I've probably turned into B)

Ditto.  Upholstery, clothing, carpet, etc. are the worst - it never comes out!  :gaah:

Secret: If I can detect texture through the envelope of a greeting card, I'll open it outdoors (or at least in the garage).  If there's glitter, I'll read it, note whom to thank, and trash the entire thing before it can contaminate my house.  It's the COVID of greeting cards / gift bags / tissue paper!

(But I do kinda like some glitter inks.    )

Excellent review as always. Especially the blow-up images. Even more important (for me) is your vast array of comparative ink colours. I mean, exactly this colour isn't all that wide-spread.
