Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diamine Tobacco Sunburst

This is review #110 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: The zoom has the most accurate color - a warm / golden / yellowish brown.  The AP is too yellow.  The other images are a bit too reddish brown.  Cleaning was quick and easy.

Neat colour. Sort of a golden brown, no, that's already out there. Copper? No, ditto. Maybe a bright bronze....

I would say a golden brown.  And I do like these shades, but I think I like Herbin Lie de Thé better.

I like all of the inks in the Diamine 'Guitar' series - and whilst this one isn't my favourite of them, it's a very nice ink, which I like for the autumn in particular. 

 

As is often the case, I was slightly surprised by how different it looks in an EF compared to my great big fat nibs, and the red definitely comes through more in the more concentrated, darker lines. 

 

So of course now I'm curious if the same applies to the others as well - particularly Desert Burst, which is so very close to this one.

I've got Pelham Blue inked at the moment, which is nice, but the jury's still out...

It may be that the images make it look too red.  Certainly in person, I wouldn't describe it as reddish, but rather "golden" or "yellow-leaning brown".

Ah, well, it appears Pelham Blue is the only other Guitar ink I have, so hopefully you're not dying of curiosity...   (Cuz I'm not likely to buy more samples of anything until the end of summer next year.)

Hmm.  Yeah, that looks too red on my screen.  Believe the zoom - a nice sort of golden brown.

That looks like a really nice ink. I definitely like the shading on this one… the lighter yellow-gold-brown adds depth to the lines, even in your fine nib.  Very nice! 

And I start to notice a trend regarding inks I like a lot… yellow-greens, yellow-browns 😉

Yes, these inks shade nicely and give a good range of colors.  I'm finding I like this range of browns more than the reddish or "neutral" browns (the ones where you're not sure which way it leans, it's just "brown").

 

Fortunately, it's a Diamine, so trying it out is rather inexpensive, even if all you can get are bottles.

I like it, but not enough to replace Lie de The.  Stay tuned for Pelham Blue - it's ink #113 (just recorded today).

I find that if it works well in an EF, it almost always looks even better in larger nibs.  Not always, and wetness plays a huge role in how similar the EF color is to the color from larger nibs, but things like shading, sheen, halo, and color complexity tend to improve as the nib gets bigger.  So I figure if someone likes what they see from my EF, even if they don't use Japanese EFs, they'll probably like the look from their own pens...

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 315µm.
