Stone pens

I am wondering how pens can be made from stone. I saw some pictures and I liked what I saw.

Just to understand: how are they done? Are they shells on other materials or solid? Are they not very fragile?

Did you ever make one?

I would like to have a pen made from Connemara or Carrara marble.

I made a pen barrel and section from pozzolana (a volcanic rock, porous). It gave nice results and a warm feeling to the touch with a nice grip also. I first made a hole into the native rock with a diamond drill. Then I inserted a metallic sleeve inside the hole bonding it with epoxy glue. Then I used an old mini lathe to shape the external aspect of the part. To shape It I attached to the tool post an adapter for a Dremel mandrel with a spinning diamond disk. It worked well with low speed and lots of water. Be careful, the rock dust and diamond dust will badly damage the lathe. I used a badly worn one that I modified and that was specially used for rock turning...

Hope it helps.
