Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Organics Studio Ralph Waldo Emerson Twilight Blue

This is review #99 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Smears after "dry", gets on your fingers from who knows where.  Really, just can't recommend this ink in this nib unless you just have to see sheen, and even then, use a wet nib.  Cleaning was a relief.  Er, I mean took about twice as long as a normal ink, required soaking the feed, but only needed plain water.  Oh, and the cap required rinsing, too.  I did not try to correct colors in the images, since my eyes can't tell what the blue color is under all the sheen. The zoom photo is probably close, probably a little too dark a blue.  The scan is surely off.  The main photo's purplish look is how my eyes perceive it due to the blue ink + red sheen.  To recover, I'm now going to go watch videos of lion cubs playing in the wild.

Somewhere there is a pen and paper where this ink shines. Maybe it needs to lose the sheen in order to shine?

 

It's not for me though, the color is too dark.

Lion cubs, eh? I have one siting in my lap, distracting me as I type:  purring, "I'm prettier than Makhabesh" 

I got into the sheen business a coupe of years ago, but I absolutely don't like these type of inks. I couldn't focus on my thoughts whilst writing. I was distracted constantly by the kaleidoscopic colours.... The more "flat and boring" the better.  

 

I hope the next one will be less taxing

Lion cubs in the wild are hilarious - especially when their momma is trying to get them to behave.   Give your little lion some love from me.

  Long ago, I got some sheening inks to see what all the hype was about.  This was the only super-sheener, and that was enough.  OK, grand, shiny!  But smearing and no flow and ink flakes?  Thanks, anyway.  Not worth it.  Shading, on the other hand, I'm addicted to.

The next three are much more tame, though the one in my pen now has some nice gold sheen, easily seen, but no smear or flow problems.

I suspect a wet pen would do the trick.

After dipping the nib in water, the color is like the smear at the end of the dry-time test.  And the blue is a bit lighter than the zoom image shows.  You might like it diluted.   (On the other hand, there are so many blue inks, that you can probably just find one of that color...)

Glad to give you a feeling of ink safety.   Do people do "new stuff" posts here on FPN?  I'm having a hard time remembering any.  It's ridiculously common on Reddit - talk about enabling!  Someone posted a pic of their new Cross Wanderlust Malta and I confess to wanting to run out (virtually speaking) and get one for myself - so pretty...

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 270µm.

@axialix, here are four different areas of the slide for this ink captured at 400x.  Hope you enjoy them.  I let it sit for a couple of days, which made it more interesting (it was boring even after initially dry).  The scope is sitting with #4 in focus now, and I'm thinking I'll try leaving it there when I go to 1000x - in theory, the scope is designed to let me do that without moving the platform, but I'm worried the lens will hit the slide - we'll see.  (I have found the oil, lens cleaner fluid and paper, and instructions, so now it's just a question of time - and I'm not feeling well, so that's delaying everything.)

 

The pale blue in this one is where the ink was really thin.  The darker area in all of them is where the ink pulled back together - even under the slip cover.

Maybe Klein was at the party this ink threw.  (Actually, I think it's just that the camera and software don't pick up nuances in color - or maybe the sheen doesn't interfere with their color perception like it does ours...  I dunno.)

You're very welcome! I was thrilled to find those bit of the slide. (On day one, I worried it might take ages while I went from ink to ink, looking for an interesting one.) This experience has taught me to ink the slide when I ink the pen, and then capture the image after the review is complete - gives the ink more time to "get it together".   Previously, I've inked the slide the day before I start the review (to spread the work around) and photographed it the same day - no more of that!

Thank you so much!  I sincerely appreciate it.  Yesterday (day 2), I still wasn't entirely sure if it was COVID or the common cold, but today, I'm convinced it's just the common cold.  All my symptoms have been the same (as when I have a cold), and I'm feeling considerably better this (late) morning, with mostly just a very sore throat.  For some bizarre reason, I tend to get the common cold  once every five years.  You could practically set a clock to it, and it's been 5 years since the last one...   Very grateful it's nothing more serious.  So, lots of sleep and chicken soup for the weekend.

OK, @axialix, I finally got around to the oil immersion - not nearly so scary as it seemed before several YT videos.   But I don't know that the image is all that impressive...  The black grid is 100µmx100µm, the scale is 1000µm (aka 1mm) with ten divisions of 100µm each.

Thanks!  (I realized shortly after I cleaned my Monteverde Moonstone slide that I should have done the oil immersion on it...  Maybe I'll try to re-do it later.)

 

I just noticed that the scale isn't really visible here - it was well inside the image in the microscope software, but that must show more than what's saved - lesson learned.  Still, the grid lets you get an idea of the scale - 10 squares = 1mm.

To be honest, I'm mesmerized by colour not measurement
