Recommendations for raden pen?

Recommended Posts

I would like to get a fountain pen utilizing the raden technique.  I'd appreciate any recommendations for both contemporary and discontinued pens.

I know that Pilot makes the capless in three raden styles, however, that pen is a bit too bulky for long-term writing for me (I prefer the Decimo, having smaller hands). So, anything apart from Pilot I'd be interested in knowing about!

Thanks in advance!

The Pelikan Radens are beautiful but larger than you probably want. I missed out on a Pilot VP years ago and haven't been willing to pay the price they want for one now. All Radens seem to be very pricy to me.

I didn't know Pelikan made a raden -- just did a web search and you're right -- quite expensive!  Perhaps because it's not a normal specialization for them? Beautiful pen, however, which I'll add to my list.

Radens are more pricey because of all the hand-work and lacquering involved.  It's a traditional craft like urushi that requires quite a bit of skill and time to produce successfully. I think one has to look at it from the perspective of being usable art -- and that often comes with a hefty price tag 😉  Definitely more of a grail pen for most people -- me included!

Nakaya have a lot of samples, Raden included. Check our their site at nakaya.org. I've been wanting to get myself a Nakaya but they have so many beautiful pens it's hard to decide which to get not to mention the cheapest pens are at least $700.

Have a look for the Conklin Endura Abalone Shell Limited Edition.  Despite it's 'limited' status, it is quite affordable.  May be too large for you, but worth a look.

I just received mine last week, and it's a beauty.

Cheers,

Effrafax.

Taccia a makes fountain pens with Raden, some with different looks.  I believe Moonman made a Raden pen, considerably less expensive than most of the other pens with that material.
