Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: 3 Oysters Delicious Cool Gray

This is review #95 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Quick and easy cleaning.  Not sure any of the images capture the right shade of grey. :( The ink name is "Gray", but I didn't notice and spelled it "Grey".

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Nice review of a nice grey. Reminds me of Diamine's Graphite (with its touch of green and half a touch of brown) in your second last blow-up.

😀😀

Life is too short to drink bad wine (Goethe)

Hmm.  I don't see any tint other than perhaps bluish - in real life and on screen.

How does this ink compare to Doldam Grey (which didn't really wow me when I tried a sample of it)?

This does look like a nice grey although I have some I really like already (Diamine Grey and Earl Grey -- and my favorite, De Atramentis Tchaikowsky/Silver Grey).

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I haven't used (or reviewed) Doldam yet.  (If you wish to speed it up, feel free to get in a voting war with the folk who want RO Thunderstorm and/or Organics Studio Ralph Waldo Emerson Twilight Blue to be next. :D )

That said, Doldam appears to be a warm grey, with brownish hues (despite pictures from some vendors that make it look like a neutral grey).  But I won't be able to say for sure until I get there.

Yeah, unless you're looking for "yet another cool grey", this probably isn't unique enough to justify (unlike Vinta Armada).  But for someone looking for a cool grey, this seems like a really good one.

Well, now I don't know what to think.  The swab images online vary pretty widely, and my memory said it was warmer, but I just went and looked at my own sample-vial-cap-swab and it looks rather cool.  No idea what to make of that, except my memory is not necessarily reliable.  I guess we'll see when I get it in a pen.

Thanks as always Liz - great review, and that's one nice looking grey. Perhaps not different enough from some of my other greys, but if remember where I saw 3 oysters on sale in the UK recently, who knows....

I'm finding that's the thing with greys - the differences aren't huge.

Glad I'm not in shades of grays/greys. But this one looks nice, especially if it's the colour of Mahkabesh's coat ;)

I loved especially the wooly lines.

Pratchett's quote reminds me of one  by from Jacques Sterberg, which is cat's take on the bible from the cat's POV. :D

 I've always imagined Makhabesh being lion-colored.  But I'm quite happy to let each reader imagine details for themselves.  Maybe in this (that) universe, sphinxes can change the color of their hair / fur (à la Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker, only deliberate).

Right?  This one fuzzes very nicely! :D

Google yielded no results. :(

See if this helps:

I passed it through, google translate. See if you can read it... :)

I love gray/grey inks...have samples of both Iros, and have heard of Three Oysters but don't have any.  This tempts me.  Thanks for the review!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 275µm.

I missed this one. How did that happen? Another grey to try. :)

:)  Well, this one posted on a Friday rather than Tuesday - I think people miss the Friday posts sometimes.  This is a nice grey, with a finer than average line.  I calculated the average today (based on 173 inks measured): 291.9476744µm.

I decided today that it was time to migrate from an ink spreadsheet to an ink database.  I've spent many hours on the GUI design (and importing the data, cleaning it up, splitting it into separate fields, and into master, detail, and lookup tables - whee - it's like I'm back at work as a developer).  Coding is mostly done.  Am Currently designing a query for exporting to a public google sheet (for others).  Next will come some logic for analysis...

I've updated the "About Me" tab in my profile with a link to this google sheet, should anyone be interested. :)  See notes there about its accuracy.

Yeeha! Thank you!

FYI - The 'About Me' tab does not appear in the mobile version of profile pages (nor does any of the text that appears in that tab).

OK, annoying, but...

  1. In a thread, tap on the user's name / avatar
  2. Scroll down past followers, past "About LizEF", past "Profile Information", past "Favourites", past "Recent Profile Visitors", past "Your Achievements" (which maybe only I see), to the tab-looking thing labeled "Activity"
  3. Note the downward-facing triangle on the right side of the "Activity" tab.  Tap it.
  4. Pick "About Me".
  5. :D

I suspect 3 and 4 are only possible for users who have filled out the relevant info - I see it for you, but not for another user.

PS: You're welcome! :)
