Troublemaker Milky Ocean vs Sailor Ink Studio 143

My favourite shade of blue right now, and Troublemaker Milky Ocean is probably my favourite ink I own.

Troublemaker inks can be a bit of a hassle to procure, so I'd say 143 is a pretty decent and convenient dupe. There are definitely some minute differences however. Mainly, Sailor 143 is a slightly bluer version of Milky Ocean. Milky Ocean also has more dynamism in hue shading as it shades a bit more between blue to purple, rather than blue to lighter blue as in Sailor 143. Sailor 143 does get a bit more purpleish when pooling though. If not compared together, they can be hard to tell apart-- heck, they are even hard to tell apart in these photos!

Some people say TMKR inks can run dry, but I've not yet found this to be an issue with my bottle. Sailor 143 is obviously a high quality experience as is with other Sailor inks.

All writing samples below were done with a Sailor Zoom nib. I tried to colour correct to the best of my ability.

There is another Sailor ink (Sailor Nadeshiko) I would really like to try out as it looks to be a slightly more purple version of Milky Ocean, making the gradient as such:

Purple <--> Nadeshiko <--> Milky Ocean <--> 143 <--> Blue

TLDR: Sailor 143 is more blue than Milky Ocean, but they are very similar!

Thanks for the comparison....

The almost look identical..... :)

Yeah, if they're not being used side by side it's really hard to tell the difference. The pictures don't really show the subtle difference at all haha that's how close they are.

Thanks for reading :)

My milky ocean doesn't look like your milky ocean...

I find it much more more purple than the 143, which for me is much more definite blue. I wonder if it's a batch thing?

I have the Manyo Nadeshiko on order, but it's with something else that won't be shipped for a couple of weeks, so I can't compare it yet!

Mine is a little more purple than these photos, but I couldnt get both inks to play nice with colour correction. :( But on paper they're still super similar! Maybe it's a batch thing like you said? I have heard of some bottles of Milky Ocean being very dry, but mine is weirdly not at all either.

I can't wait to read your review! I'm addicted to this colour palette and had to remind myself I have tonnes of ink samples last time I made a stationary order so I didn't get Nadeshiko.

I wish I could be restrained enough to get samples, but I always think they're such bad value for money, so I won't buy them (I happily give them away and swap them though!). There are so few available here anyway that it's really not worth it.

I love both Haha and Nekoyanagi (and all the other Sailor Manyos) so I figured I couldn't really go wrong with another one!

Its funny. Not that long ago shading, washed out colours were almost universally despised as everyone flocked to high saturation inks and the search for sheen. I remember posting how much I really liked Fujiyama Blue and almost got lynched.

They might be a bit worse value and same with the Iroshizuku 15mL bottles (that Jetpens weirdly no longer seems to carry...?), but I have such a hard time finishing even samples though I'm SO tempted to buy full bottles of inks I like very much. 😅 Haha and Nekoyanagi are both great colours-- have the latter in one of my pens right now.

Yeah I definitely got into the sheen craze at first! But I have to say, I am not a fan of the long dry times. Muted tones are definitely a bit easier on the eyes also. I'm just waiting for muted tones (that aren't too pale for every day writing) + shimmer to come into style 👀

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
