StandardGraph Elder Blue (Holunderblau)

Another in my series of reviews of StandardGraph inks. Others have reviewed this ink before, but not on a more recent review form, and only with image links not embedded images.

Like the other inks from StandardGraph, this is a nice colour that performs well and dries quickly. I use it a lot, but have recently realised that the colour is almost indistinguishable from my bottle of Waterman Purple. Admittedly the bottle is old and it is possible that the current Waterman line is a different colour, but if it isn't, it would be hard to justify seeking out the StandardGraph offering when Waterman is inexpensive, even in Australia. (It is being offered at $A8 to $A9 at a range of retailers including Amazon.com.au and Pulp Addiction.)

Nice review and thanks for your good images.

I too would say that this ink and Waterman's Purple are very similar, although my W Purple looks a bit darker (possibly a paper-to-screen effect).

AFAIK, the W Purple ink has remained the same, only the name has been changed (to Tender Purple). The only W ink itself which has been changed is their blue-black.

Whatever, if one is not all that  hot about purples (which I am ), then one might simply stick to W Purple, not because of price but because of the availability. Both cost (at least here in Krautland) about 0.15-2.0 Euros per ml (SG usually in 30-ml bottles, W in 50 ml), but W ink is available almost everywhere and SG isn't.

Thanks for another review!  Even if I'm not likely to buy it, I still enjoy seeing reviews - especially of brands that aren't so common (at least not to me). :)

Thanks for the review :)

Reminds me of Herbin Violet Pensée and Noodler's North African violet...

I have some Herbin Violet Pensée cartridges somewhere so I’ll dig them out and do a comparison at some point.

Looks like this ink has some water resistance.

Yes, I think so. I am new to reviewing so maybe others do water test differently, but so far I’ve been putting a few drops of water on that bit of the paper until it’s wet and giving the ink a light rub. There is some smearing but less than some tests I’ve seen on this site. This has been a feature of all three StandardGraph inks I’ve reviewed so far, and might be related to their quick drying.

Thanks Luci, looking forward to it.

By the way, what breed is that handsome cat of yours?

She is a Modern Siamese. A delightful breed that unlike most cats, love cuddles all the time. Her brother is sitting on me as I type this.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
