Anyone tried "The Adventurer" journaling / solo RPG game?

This game is a creative way to use pens and that stash of inks and paper you've been hording (admit it!).  The maker of this game posted it on Reddit long ago.  I haven't tried it (yet), but I'm intrigued.  Has anyone here heard of it or tried it?

Link with details and PDF download: The Adventurer by James Chip

Basically, you journal from the POV of your main character, and draw cards (your own, or he has an online tool you can use) to figure out who, what, where, and / or the event that happens next.  The cards give you a word or two and you fill in the details to make up your story.  I'm not sure I'm up to this level of non-control (though that's the point and a good creative exercise).  I've considered tweaking the card meanings myself, and even using my pens to make my own cards (hooray! another excuse to buy more FP supplies - maybe Col-o-ring should make special cards just for this).

Anywho, just wondering if anyone's tried it and / or what your thoughts are.

Hmmm, might be fun!  Like, no-pressure fun.  As opposed to my 'actual' writing.  Thanks for the heads-up!   😀

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:)  You're welcome.  I'm still pondering whether it will be fun.  I think it will be, the minute I think of the character to start things off.  (I can't seem to start anything without the character and the initial scene.)

I will probably just try to make up my own card game.  I see that you separate them into suites and each one has a meaning, so...

At the end of the PDF download, there's a page with the suits and cards listed but unassigned, so you can do just that. :)

Oooo wow, looks like a lot of fun! Thank you for sharing about it!!!

I might try it with Tarot card. If I rotate the suit and the meanings periodically, it’d be a great practice for focusing on various details of each card.

You're welcome!  I figured at least some of us would enjoy this game.

I watch my nephews in the afternoon after they get out of school, and they go back go school tomorrow. I think I'm gonna start this while they do their homework.

I am the tarot reading, bookworm, whiskey drinking, witchcraft practicing, old fashioned writing, aunt Beasty in my family and I love it. Tarot readings for sale or trade, especially ink as I've lost all of my pen stuff from a bad burglary last year. And I need penpals! Anyone interested, please PM me!

This seems like an interesting and fun idea! I wanna buy a new journal and try it out with one of my fountain pens!

For those who do try it out, I'd be very interested in hearing about your experience with it. :)

:)  Seems like a good plan - make it look like you're doing homework too! ;)

Somehow missed this thread before now.  Unfortunately, the link to the .pdf seems to be down.... :(

Part of me is intrigued by the concept.  But part of me is going, "Naaah -- you already have ideas for novels floating around in your head...."

The link works one time out of 35 on my end, but it definitely loads (itch.io seems to be difficult at best today)

Well, given that I had trouble with this site being really glitchy the other day, and then discovering that a bunch of folders in Mail had vanished off the sidebar (I had to reboot my laptop and then they all showed back up)?  It's anyone's guess what went wrong.... :(

Huh.  I can't even get itch.io to respond, let alone James's account or the page for this game.  And now it is.  The game is still there, though there's now a charge for it.  Itch.io seems to be role playing as glitch.io at the moment.  Perhaps later or another day...

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
