Crazy Question-Montblanc at Disney World

Recommended Posts

I’m trying to get my wife-a certified Disney nut-interested in fountain pens, and would like to look at the WD LE in person(abd possibly buy)

Does anyone know if there’s a place anywhere on the WDW property that sells MB pens, or at least might have that particular LE? I know there’s a store at Disney Springs that sell MB watches, but don’t recall if they sell pens.

I know this is off the wall, but I also have 5 more days here and plenty of time to hit anywhere in any of the parks or elsewhere.

Why not e-mail Montblanc? I'm sure someone in their customer services team will be able to tell you. Alterntively, they might be able to send one to your resort.

Luxury of Time by Diamonds International appears to have a Montblanc pen display from what I can see in the Google Photos 3D. I'm guessing that would be your best bet.

Thanks, that’s the place I was thinking of but couldn’t find it anywhere specifically. Headed down that way tomorrow so will check.

Haven’t been there yet(I’m not the keeper of the schedule and got my days confused). Will report I think on Wednesday.

Disney has certainly sold fountain pens in the past.  They had a Walt Disney version of the Eversharp Skyline (a pen which Walt endorsed in advertisements decades ago).

So, they did HAVE some. The only ones out were in a wall-mounted display box.

I asked to see one, and was told I could look at the one on the wall. They seemed a bit stumped as to why I wanted to handle one, and wouldn’t let me do so unless I bought it.

So, needless to say, I left without a pen.

Well, that's unfortunate. Awful pretentious to expect someone to not be able to inspect an expensive item prior to purchase. It's something seen too often at luxury retailers.

To be fair, I have looked a watched there in the past(mostly pre-owned Rolex) and they’ve been fine with letting me handle/look at them.

The attitude I got on this was more “why do you care about what a pen looks and feels like?”. On a $1k pen, a whole lot.

IMO, the place does at least okay with watches, but I don’t think they have any business selling pens

Visited again last night and it was a night and day difference in experience. Thank didn’t but, but having handled albeit not written with one, I like it and will see what I can do to get one. All the metal made me expect a heavy pen, but I’d put it in line with normal 146/149 weights and balance. It’s a girthy pen-it felt larger in diameter than a 149 to me, but I didn’t have mine with me(too warm to wear a shirt or jacket with a pocket) to compare.

As a general question, does anyone know what pen this is based on? I’ve been told a lot of LE/WEs are 146 based, but as I said it felt bigger than a 149.

The one I looked at(btw, in the wall case, although they had a couple in stock) wasn’t inked, but I did at least hood it in the writing position and also gave it a close look.

I’m at MCO now, but was tempted to circle back, stretch my budget, and drop $1100+(w/tax) on it). If they’d had the ink, I’d at least have bought that(even though it looks basically useless to me except as a highlighter ink) but all they had were bottles,m and cartridges of black and midnight blue, plus some black and blue BP refills.

Still, though, even though I think buying at a boutique is better overall, it’s not convenient for me to visit one and I’d buy a pen from them if my second experience was more typical.

The Shakespeare WE I have is similar in size to the 146.

It is also metal, but the pen is so wonderfully balanced, it means that it does not take a lot of effort to move it around the page. It's like holding a dart. The nib on my WE is 18K, rather than 14K which gives a slight difference in the writing experience. The Shakespeare will not post. So, if you want a pen that posts that is something worth considering.

It was the first pen I used in the One Pen one Month Challenge to see if these so-called "jewellry pens" were practical writers. After two weeks - it felt like I was writing with a different pen - it as wetter and very different to the pen I'd started with. The pen proved to be an emminently practical writer. The inability to post (and the size of the cap) made it more of a desk pen, than an EDC.

I've nothing useful to add.  Sorry.

And I didn't have the heart to tell her why.
And there wasn't a part of me that didn't want to say goodbye.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm really going to try and find a way to get this one. I did notice the super balance, and I like that it's big and fat(subjective, and I didn't have them side-by-side to compare, but I think bigger, or at least consistently bigger and "straighter" than a 149). It's every bit as well balanced as a 146, which is my benchmark reference pen for basically anything else and what I consider the closest thing to a perfect pen as exists.

My habits lean toward not posting, and in fact I never post my 146, 149, or any of my other MBs. The pens I regularly/consistently post are my MB 145, my Pelikan M200/400 series pens, and my Lamy 2000s. Those are posted because they're simply more comfortable for me to use that way. My default practice is not to post, and I use enough vintage pens regularly that I don't take a chance on doing it with those.

Wanted to give a follow up on this and say that I didn't buy there, but did end up ordering one and it arrived today.

This was my first new MB, and it was fun to get to unbox it for the first time. Of course, since I don't buy a pen that I won't use, I inked it up with a bottle of ink that was in the box and I've been dithering on getting-Petrol Blue.

I've written with it in meetings this afternoon, and have really enjoyed it. It's definitely the heaviest pen I have, but writes just as I expect a Montblanc to.

I've had a ton of fun just looking the pen over closely also. There are so many small details in it, and the overall execution is excellent.

As a side note, I know this same basic pen body has been used for several "Great Characters" pens. Is this a pen in and of itself, or is it based on something else? The nib looks to be the size of a 146, and OAL is similar, but it's a big fat pen more like the 149 in hand.

Montblanc tends to use the same bodies for their different series of pens and just change up the furniture and details to encompass the design they come up with. I only have one MB - the blue JFK - and it's a great pen with some heft to it like you mentioned. I'm glad you were able to pick one up and enjoy it.
